Message: "Printer Failure There is a problem with the printer or ink system. Turn the printer off, then on. If you continue to get this message, contact HP." No error code. I performed power & plug method multiple times to no avail.  All ink cartridges are official HP brand. Checked other message boards for solutions and found nothing to help (such as making sure ink cartridge is filled. )

Hi @Notonthepayroll,

I'd like to help!

Try the below steps-

Reset the product

  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Wait at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
  • Reconnect the power cord to the printer.
  • Turn the printer on. HP recommends plugging the printer directly into a wall outlet.

Remove and reinsert the ink cartridges

  1. Open the door to access to the ink cartridges.

  2. Wait until the carriage stops moving before you continue.

  3. Push the ink cartridge to remove it, and then push it into its slot until it snaps into place.

  4. Repeat these steps for the other three ink cartridges.

  5. Close the ink cartridge access door.

If the error message persists, continue to the next step.

Check the carriage for a printhead latch

Open the door to access to the ink cartridges, and then determine if the carriage inside the printer has a printhead latch.

Example of a carriage with a latch on the printhead

  • If your carriage has a printhead latch, continue to the next step.

Reseat the printhead up to three times

You might need to reseat the printhead up to three times.

  1. With the printer turned on, unplug the power cord from the rear of the printer.

  2. Lift the carriage latch, slightly lift the printhead, lower the printhead back into the carriage, wiggle the printhead left and right, and then lower the carriage latch to lock the printhead into place.

  3. Close the cartridge access door.

  4. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.

  5. Wait for the printer to start, and then look for the error.

    • If the error message persists, repeat the steps to reseat the printhead up to three times.

Update the printer firmware

Updating the printer firmware might resolve printhead problems. Go to Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware for more information.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Very long answer that included much of what I'd said at the outset I'd already done, that didn't work.

I solved the problem on my own by going into the computer's printer control and seeing there that an additional, previously not shown, alert about another ink cartridge needing to be replaced. After I addressed that with a new cartridge, the pribter went back to normal.

IT IS EXTREMELY FRUSTRATING AND ILLOGICAL THAT THE PRINTER'S READOUT SHOULD RESORT TO A MESSAGE BOTH AS ALL ENCOMPASSING AND ASCAMBIGUOUS AS THIS MESSAGE REFERRED TO ABOVE. IT FAILS TO PROVIDE SUFFICIENT INFORMATION ABOUT THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM, AND IT FAILS TO PROVIDE SUFFICIENT INFORMATION ABOUT THE SUGGESTED COURSE OF ACTION TO TAKE. HP IS A LARGE ENOUGH COMPANY TO MAINTAIN A FAR BETTER ARMY OF TECHNICIANS TO ADVISE WITHOUT LEAVING ITS CUSTOMER BASE OUT TO DRY IN USER-GROUPS. IT IS A MAJOR FAIL,  AND I WILL HESITATE TO MAKE MY NEXT PURCHASE AN HP PRODUCT.
