During the middle of a print job the above message appeared and I have changed out two new Magenta cartridges and get the same messages. Internet suggestions on cleaning and re-aligning the print heads did not solve the issue. Don't know if the only solution is to but=y a new print head assembly of new printer. Suggestions?

Hi @acbarron,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you're encountering a message stating "Printer not designed to use continuous ink systems" on your HP OfficeJet Pro 8740, it's likely due to the printer detecting non-standard ink systems or cartridges.
Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue:
- Check Cartridges: Ensure that you're using genuine HP ink cartridges compatible with your printer model. Non-genuine or refilled cartridges might trigger this error message.
- Reset Printer: Try resetting the printer. Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for a few minutes, then plug it back in and turn it on. This can sometimes clear temporary errors.
- Firmware Update: Ensure that your printer has the latest firmware installed. Sometimes, firmware updates address compatibility issues with ink cartridges. Update the firmware on an HP printer
- Clean Cartridge Contacts: Remove the ink cartridges and clean the contacts on both the cartridges and the printer carriage. Use a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water to gently wipe the contacts.
- Inspect for Obstructions: Check for any obstructions in the printer's carriage path or around the cartridge area. Even a small piece of debris can interfere with the printer's operation.

I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
