Officejet Pro 8600 Plus Model N911g. This has worked perfectly until it started to refuse to print and instead displayed messages (a) that there was a problem with the printer or ink system and (b) that the printhead appeared to be missing, not detected, or incorrectly installed. I have repeatedly operated the release handle and moving the printheaad upwards and jiggled it from side to side as recommended on online forums. I have done this about 6 times with no improvement and then removed the printhead and cleaned it before trying again.
This fault has appeared spontaneously and is not connected with my fitting new ink cartridges. There are no changes to my computer systems that could have changed the ability of my laptop and printer to communicate. Is this simply a deliberate attempt to cause obsolescence and require some update?

Hi @YH53 ,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you've done a lot to troubleshoot the printhead issue on your HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus (model N911g). This type of problem can indeed be very frustrating. Here are some additional steps you can take to further diagnose and potentially resolve the issue:
1. Verify the Printhead and Ink Cartridges
- Check for Compatibility: Ensure that the ink cartridges are compatible with the printer. Sometimes, using non-HP or counterfeit cartridges can cause issues.
- Inspect Cartridges: Make sure the ink cartridges are not empty, damaged, or leaking. Clean the electrical contacts on the cartridges with a lint-free cloth and distilled water.
2. Thoroughly Clean the Printhead
- Remove the Printhead: Turn off the printer and unplug it. Remove the printhead and gently clean the electrical contacts on both the printhead and the printer using a lint-free cloth and distilled water.
- Soak the Printhead: If cleaning doesn't help, you can try soaking the printhead in warm distilled water for about 10 minutes to remove any dried ink. Ensure it is completely dry before reinstalling it.
3. Reset the Printer
- Perform a Hard Reset: Turn off the printer, unplug the power cord, and wait for about 1 minute. Plug it back in and turn the printer on.
- Factory Reset: If a hard reset doesn't work, try performing a factory reset. This can usually be done through the printer's settings menu, but the exact steps can vary. Refer to the user manual for detailed instructions.
4. Firmware Update Update the firmware on an HP printer
- Check for Updates: Make sure the printer's firmware is up to date. Sometimes, firmware updates can resolve hardware recognition issues.
- Download Firmware: Go to the HP Support website, find the latest firmware for your printer model, and follow the instructions to update it.
5. Printer Diagnostics
- Run Printer Diagnostics: Use the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool, available on the HP Support website. This tool can automatically diagnose and fix many common printer issues.
- Internal Printer Diagnostics: Some HP printers have built-in diagnostic tools. Check the printer’s control panel menu for diagnostic options.
