HP Officejet Pro 8610 e-All-in-One Printer

Error message reads: The printhead appears to be missing, not detected, or incorrectly installed  please help. I have turned the printer on and off. I've reset and downloaded updated fireware. I have also wiggled the printhead in place like a post suggested. Nothing works.

Hi @Dexter41,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The "Missing or Failed Printhead" error on your HP printer can be particularly frustrating. Here are some detailed steps you can follow to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:

1. Remove and Reinstall the Printhead

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  2. Open the printer cover to access the printhead.
  3. Remove the ink cartridges from the printhead.
  4. Lift the latch handle on the print carriage.
  5. Remove the printhead by lifting it straight up.
  6. Inspect the printhead and the contacts for any debris or damage.
  7. Reinsert the printhead by sliding it back into the print carriage.
  8. Secure the latch handle and ensure it clicks into place.
  9. Reinstall the ink cartridges and close the printer cover.
  10. Plug in the printer and turn it on.

2. Clean the Printhead Contacts

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  2. Remove the printhead as described above.
  3. Clean the electrical contacts on the printhead and inside the printer using a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water or isopropyl alcohol. Be gentle to avoid damaging the contacts.
  4. Let the contacts dry completely before reinstalling the printhead.
  5. Reinstall the printhead and ink cartridges, then turn on the printer.

3. Reset the Printer

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  2. Wait for at least 60 seconds.Plug the printer back in and turn it on.
  3. Check if the error message is cleared.

4. Update Printer Firmware

  1. Visit the HP Support website and enter your printer model.
  2. Download the latest firmware for your printer.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to update the firmware.

5. Run HP Print and Scan Doctor (Windows)

  1. Download and install the HP Print and Scan Doctor from the HP website.
  2. Open the tool and select your printer.Follow the on-screen instructions to diagnose and fix any issues.

6. Check for Ink Cartridge Compatibility

  1. Ensure you are using genuine HP ink cartridges that are compatible with your printer model.
  2. Replace any problematic cartridges with new ones if necessary.

7. Replace the Printhead

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
