Hi @Rosa61,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like there might be a sensor issue with your HP 5740 printer. Here are a few steps you can try to resolve the problem.

  • Check for Obstructions: Make sure there are no pieces of paper or debris blocking the paper tray or the sensor that detects whether the tray is open or closed.
  • Restart the Printer: Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve minor issues. Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for a few minutes, then plug it back in and turn it on again.
  • Reset the Printer: Try resetting the printer to its default settings. You can usually find this option in the printer's menu or settings.
  • Update Firmware: Ensure that your printer's firmware is up to date. Visit the HP website, enter your printer model, and download the latest firmware if available.
  • Manually Check the Sensor: Locate the sensor that detects whether the paper tray is open or closed. It's usually a small plastic or metal component near the tray. Ensure that it moves freely and isn't stuck.

By following these steps, you should be able to troubleshoot and hopefully resolve the issue with your HP 5740 printer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
