Every time that I plug in my HP OfficeJet 9012 printer to my computer it starts printing:
Content - Length: 179
Content - Type: application/ipp
Host: local host
Until I shut it off - when I plug it back in to the computer it starts again. There are no print jobs in que. I believe it has to do with the "spooler" but I have not figured it out.

Hi @Sam6262
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like your HP OfficeJet 9012 is printing unwanted, automatic print jobs every time it's connected to your computer, even when no print jobs are in the queue. The message "Content-Length: 179" along with "Content-Type: application/ipp" indicates that the printer is receiving a job through the IPP (Internet Printing Protocol), but no actual print content is being sent.
This issue might be related to the spooler or printer driver settings. Here are several steps to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:
1. Restart the Printer and Computer
- Power off the printer.
- Restart your computer.
- Turn on the printer again and check if the issue persists after the reboot.
2. Check Printer Queue
Even if no print jobs seem to be in the queue, there may still be jobs stuck in the spooler.
Open the Printer Queue on your computer:
- On Windows, go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers. Right-click on your HP OfficeJet 9012, and select See what's printing.
- If there are any jobs in the queue, cancel them.
Clear the Print Spooler:
- Press Windows Key + R to open the Run dialog.
- Type services.msc and hit Enter to open the Services window.
- Find Print Spooler in the list and right-click on it, then select Stop.
- Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS.
- Delete any files in this folder.
- Go back to the Services window, right-click Print Spooler, and select Start.
After this, restart the printer and check if it still prints automatically.
3. Check for Print Jobs Sent via IPP
Since the print job mentions "Content-Type: application/ipp," it seems like a network-related print job, often used for printing over a network.
- Disable IPP printing:
- Open Printer Settings on your computer.
- Go to the Ports tab in the printer properties.
- If IPP or Standard TCP/IP is checked, try unchecking it and switch to USB or another port type if available.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
