HP Deskjet 3835
Microsoft Windows 11

My HP DeskJet 3835 Prints all documents, EXCEPT most PDF document unless I download it and print from the downloaded document.

It sends the print job to the printer, but prints a blank page.

Hi @JeremyLock

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

That sounds frustrating! If your HP DeskJet 3835 is printing blank pages for most PDFs unless they are downloaded first, there are a few possible causes and solutions:

Troubleshooting Steps

Print as Image – Some PDFs have complex formatting that printers struggle with. Try this:

  • Open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  • Click File > Print.
  • Select Advanced and check Print as Image.
  • Click OK and print.

Update Printer Drivers – Outdated drivers can cause printing issues. Download the latest drivers from HP’s support page.

Check PDF Compatibility – Some PDFs may have embedded fonts or security settings that interfere with printing. Try opening the PDF in a different viewer (like Microsoft Edge) and printing from there.

Test with Another PDF – If only certain PDFs fail to print, the issue might be with the document itself rather than the printer.

Thank you hawks eye.

I tried all your options. The first option to print after opening it in Adobe means I have to download and save the pdf first to open it in Adobe. I can print downloaded pdf files.  It’s the pdfs not downloaded.

I’ve loaded the driver also and reloaded adobe.
same problem. Prints blank pdf pages still

I really appreciate the time and effort you’ve put into troubleshooting this issue—it’s frustrating when a printer refuses to cooperate despite all the right steps. I’m sorry that none of the solutions have fully resolved the problem for you. I know you’ve been thorough in trying different approaches, and I admire your patience. here are a few additional troubleshooting steps that might help:

Print as Image in Adobe Acrobat

  • Open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat.
  • Click File > Print, then select Advanced.
  • Check the box for Print As Image, then click OK and print.

Try a Different PDF Viewer

  • If Adobe isn’t working, try printing from Microsoft Edge, Foxit Reader, or another PDF viewer.
  • Some printers handle PDFs differently depending on the software used.

Check Printer Settings in Windows

  • Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners.
  • Click your printer, then select Manage > Printer Properties.
  • Under Advanced, try changing the Print Processor to WinPrint and the Default Data Type to RAW.

Update Printer Firmware

Test with a Different PDF File

  • Some PDFs may have embedded fonts or security settings that interfere with printing.
  • Try printing a simple PDF (like a plain text document) to see if the issue persists.

Check for Windows Updates

  • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and install any pending updates.
  • Sometimes, Windows updates can resolve printing issues.

If none of these work, there may be a compatibility issue between your printer and how PDFs are processed. Let me know if any of these steps help! 🚀

Take care, and stay fantastic!

@Hawks_Eye

I found a solution. My email system is Thunderbird.  It looked like thunderbird printing app was the issue as it was printing off my email system I use on my Iphone.

There is a setting in Thunderbird under ''general'' - how to open attachments in the emails. For PDF files, I changed this to open it in Adobe Acrobat as the default.  I could then print the page in adobe, without saving it first.

Thank you for your help!

That’s great to hear!

Sometimes the issue is buried in default settings, and it sounds like changing the way Thunderbird handles PDFs made all the difference.

Thanks for sharing your solution—it could definitely help others facing the same problem.

If anything else comes up, I’m happy to assist!

Stay fantastic, and have an amazing day ahead!
