My printer reported "missing, failed, or incorrectly installed printhead". I re-seated it, as HP online solutions directed. Still doesn't work; message is now "missing or failed printhead". Is there any further step I can try, or do I just need to order a new printhead altogether? And will I be able to install that myself? This printer is old, but it's been a real workhorse.

Hi @PartykeComm,
Welcome to the HP Support Community
I understand you are getting an error message HP OfficeJet Pro 8610 reported 'missing, failed, or incorrectly installed printheads'. on your HP Printer. Not to worry I will help you to get a resolution to resolve the issue.
To assist better:
- Are you using genuine HP ink cartridges?
- Does the copy print out the same way?
- Was there any recent update on the printer prior to the issue?
- Was there any paper jam or carriage jam issue on the printer recently?
While you respond to that, Let's perform a power drain:
- With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
- Remove USB cable, if present.
- Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.
- Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord (This is important) and then plug back the power cord to the printer.
- Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle
Update the printer firmware
- Click here to download and install the latest printer firmware from your product
- Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.
Power Cycle the Printer: Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, and wait for a few minutes. Then plug it back in and turn it on again. Sometimes, a power cycle can help reset the printer and resolve minor issues.
Clean the Printhead Contacts: Turn off the printer and open the carriage access door. Remove the printhead and gently clean the electrical contacts on the printhead and inside the printer with a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water. Make sure the contacts are clean and dry before re-installing the printhead.
Update Printer Firmware: Check if there are any firmware updates available for your printer on the HP website. Updating the firmware can sometimes resolve compatibility issues and improve the printer's performance.
