I had direct phone contact to the HP support in the meantime. Very friendly, fast and comprehensive indeed. But obviously tapping in the dark as well: tried the DHCP thing with me, which not really solved the issue as we already know. Might be, the duration till the effect occurs is some hours longer. Difficult to say.
My guess is a bug located in the April 21 Firmware.
Hopefully we get a fix for this soon!

I just applied your Manual IP solution to my HP OfficeJet Pro 8720's flashing disease. Fingers crossed, but so far, no flashing. Thanks for your clear and easy-to-follow solution.
I tried Print and Scan Dr first, but everything had a green checkmark and its software, which is set to auto update, was up to date.
Next, I printed out its network info and followed your truly clear steps to enter the manual IP address through my web browser. Again, thank you very much as I was having to rescue my printer numerous times every day.
If the problem returns, I'll update this post, but if you don't hear from me again, all is well in my little network's printer land

Hello again,
Sadly, I tried both of your suggestions two times through, and my Officejet Pro 8720 still enters the "all lights blinking with blank screen" state at least 4 times a day. So far, when I push the power button while it's doing this, it then basically restarts and after a brief time of print heads moving it's ready to go.
This isn't good, nor is it fun to have to keep stopping my work to go reset the printer this often each day.
Is this a sign that the printer is dying? I certainly hope not as it's only around 3 years old and was purchased new.
I've always had good luck with HP printers, and I've had several over my 35 years of Desktop computing, so I'm hoping that you can supply me with another fix to try

Hi, I'm experiencing the same thing.
It happens something like every 2-4 hours, i cant tell exactly.
i've seen this intermittent over the years with this printer, probably once every second month last two years, but then now, for 1-2 months, it's happening multiple times every day.
reach out if any additional details are required.
