My HP Officejet Pro 8620 is giving me a note saying "There is a problem with the printer or ink system"
It happened when I changed the Cyan ink cartridge and didn't realize I pit an old one in. When I put the new on is this is the message I get. I've unplugged, turned it off, took all the cartridges out and reinstalled to no avail.

Hi @Ken363,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand the "There is a problem with the printer or ink system" error on your HP Officejet Pro 8620 can be frustrating. Here are several steps to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:
1. Reset the Printer
- Turn on the printer, if it is not already on.
- Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
- With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
- Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
- Wait at least 60 seconds.
- Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
- Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
- Turn on the printer, if it does not turn on by itself.
- Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.
2. Clean the Ink Cartridge and Printhead Contacts
- Open the ink cartridge access door.
- Remove the ink cartridges from their slots.
- Clean the copper-colored contacts on the cartridges and the corresponding contacts inside the printer with a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water or isopropyl alcohol.
- Let the contacts dry completely.
- Reinstall the ink cartridges in their respective slots.
- Close the ink cartridge access door.
3. Check for Firmware Updates Update the firmware on an HP printer
- Go to the HP Software and Driver Downloads page for your printer model.
- Download and install any available firmware updates.
4. Replace the Problematic Cartridge
Since the issue started with the Cyan cartridge, try using a new and genuine HP cartridge. Sometimes, non-HP or refilled cartridges can cause issues.
5. Perform a Printer Hard Reset
- With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer.
- Disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet.
- Disconnect any USB or Ethernet cables from the printer.
- Wait 60 seconds.
- Reconnect the power cord to the back of the printer.
- Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
- Turn the printer on.
- Reconnect any USB or Ethernet cables that were disconnected earlier.
6. Run the Printer’s Diagnostic Tools
- From the printer's control panel, access the settings or maintenance menu.
- Look for options like "Clean Printhead," "Align Printer," or "Print Quality Report" and run these tools.
7. Check for Blockages or Obstructions
Ensure that there are no blockages or obstructions in the ink cartridge area or the printhead path.
