I installed a new black ink cartridge this evening and the printer told me it is "validating".  Now what?

Hello @Dex43, and welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your question. I'm here to help you get things back on track.

If your HP ENVY Inspire 7255e printer is stuck on "Validating" after installing a new black ink cartridge, here are some steps you can follow to resolve the issue:

Check Cartridge Compatibility

  • Ensure the cartridge is genuine HP and compatible with your printer.
  • For the ENVY Inspire 7255e, the correct cartridges are:
    • HP 64 Black
    • HP 64XL Black (high yield)

You can verify cartridge compatibility here - Which cartridges work with my HP printer? | HP® Support

Power Cycle the Printer

  • With the printer powered on, disconnect the power cord from the back.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power cord and turn the printer back on.
  • Check if the "Validating" message clears.

Reinstall the Ink Cartridge

  • Open the ink cartridge access door.
  • Remove the black cartridge and inspect for:
    • Protective tape still attached (remove it if present).
    • Dust or debris on the electrical contacts.
  • Reinsert the cartridge firmly until it clicks into place.

Update Printer Firmware

  • Outdated firmware can cause cartridge validation issues.
  • Use the HP Smart app to check for updates:
    • Download: HP Smart
    • Open the app > Select your printer > Printer Settings > Advanced Settings > Firmware Update.

Reset the Printer

If the issue persists:

  • On the printer touchscreen, go to:
    • Settings > Printer Maintenance > Restore Factory Defaults
  • This will reset the printer settings but won’t delete your HP account or Instant Ink enrollment.

I hope the information shared has been useful and resolves your concern.

Wishing you a smooth and hassle-free experience ahead!
