I have the same problem - initially with the M201.  I then tried an M404 and it had the same problem.  I know exactly when it happened.  I let the computer (Windows 11) run the June MS updates and restart.  My printer was on and the pages began printing after the restart.

None of the suggested fixes have stopped the problem.  I just have to turn the printer off.  These rogue pages sometimes stop and recur randomly.  They do not show in the printer queue.  I don't believe the problem is the printer itself so resetting the printer is not the answer.  (The M404 was out of the box.)  Even editing the registry to disable internet printing has not worked.  It may have reduced the problem.

I am a computer professional so experienced in solving the regular problems with printers.

My MFD M476dw printer has rogue operation exactly like Colin_CT's M201 & M404, including the apparent "connection" (i.e, problem seems strongly related to Windows 11.)

Another soul on this forum advised that he'd resolved the problem (with a different printer than my M476dw) by updating Windows 11 with "kb502731-x64".

Out of desperation (I've reloaded drivers, done a printer reset (NOT a "factory reset" as Elohi_NR has advised for other printer models), so I downloaded the above Update but "it" advised something like "not appropriate for my computer.)

Hie can you send me the link please

Sorry, I'm unable to remember the exact link I used but google "disable internet printing windows 11" and there are a number of references including videos.  There are two things to do involving regedit and gpedit.

This did not actually appear to work for long.  I wondered whether changing the connection might work so two days ago I changed from the USB connection to a network connection and the problem seems to be no longer present.

(I haven't spent time researching it but the recommended registry fixes might not be applicable to USB connected printers.)

The problem is still around as I note a new thread on this topic.  When I began looking at this forum, there were quite a few threads but some have since been combined by the moderator.

The title of this thread is not completely accurate as the rogue pages can happen randomly - before and after jobs and while the printer is idle.

I have the same problem with multiple printers. Please send me the instructions as well.

It's not clear what link you want but my suggested Google search brings up multiple detailed instructions on changes to the Registry to disable internet printing.  As I noted before, this seems to be successful for network connected printers but did not work when connected via USB.

One thing I noted in reading this forum is that details sometimes need to be more specific.  Often what is applicable to one computer depends on the exact version of Windows and how it is set to be updated.  In my case one of the updates was KB5027231 referred to several times.  My Windows 11 computer was set to install updates automatically and the problem began after installing this and KB5027119 on 16 June.  I uninstalled these but the problem remained.  I have noted other update numbers being referred to on the same date.

Both printers I have had problems with use the HP Smart app.

I have appeared to have solved/partially solved the rogue printing problem on my MFP M4767dw.

All by accident, I believe.

I did connect the printer to the internet.(It was still connected via USB)

HP offered "urgent" and "recommended updates, which I accepted and apparently updated. (I could not tell..)

The problem continued until I disconnected the USB connection

While being relieved of the toner and paper-wasting rogue print problem, I sure don't like the wireless connection.  Some programs (Word and Excel) will print directly after a long pause "looking for the printer" but I have no luck with .pdf files when printing from the icon in the .pdf app vs. the file/print dropdown.

I blame this mostly on Windows 11.  I reluctantly bought 365 after loading my copy of 2007 and finding that Microsoft apparently won't allow the old "save as" .pdf option from within the old Word version.  I can "save as pdf" from 365/word but the latter doesn't "see" a file saved by 2007.  I'm old and maybe haven't figured the "compatibility" issue.

Hello C180tom.  Your findings seem to confirm mine - network connection can solve the problem.  I was fortunately able to connect to a second connection off my modem.

Years ago, I had a number of service calls where the printer wireless connection was unreliable.  I do recall that sometimes it was desirable to change the network adapter settings to prevent the connection going to sleep during a quiet period.

As to Office, I too had the same problem when reloading the 2007 version but managed to find a small utility which restored the Print to PDF option.  Windows Defender considered the file I downloaded to be dangerous but I ignored that and ran it to restore the option.  Today, Defender destroyed the file but it has served its purpose!  (There may be less "dangerous" options but I just grabbed the first link I found via Google.)

Dear Colin_CT:

Thanks for sharing  your experience.  I was lucky (even a blind squirrel sometimes finds a nut...)  It will help me on my journey. Various print options still are a problem as the PC needs to "find" the printer.  I just bought a new PC, forced onto Windows 11 (from W10) by the hegemony of Microsoft.  I had the disk for Office2007 which did all I needed but was forced into subscribing to 365 as 2007 would no longer show the "save as .pdf" option.  Ignore my whinging, not your problem.
