Officejet 6100
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Running diagnostics I got the following error message:  Missing or failed printhead

The printhead appears to be missing, not detected, incorrectly installed, or incompatible.

The lights on the top of the printer that signal cartridge status continually cycle through the cartridge symbols.

The printer was working fine, and I had recently installed a new cartridge, Magenta I think, a day or two before this happened. I was trying to print out a check using the Quicken application.

I've gone through the online help from HP Print and Scan Doctor 5.1 trying all the things suggested with no luck. Any help will be appreciated.

I found the following advice regarding "Printhead missing" error message, which is what I had (and still have) on my Officejet 6600.  I tried to follow this instruction but it hasn't helped - perhaps I didn't execute the instructions properly. You might have better luck:

A Missing or Failed Printhead error message displays on the printer control panel or computer, indicating an ink system failure. The printer does not print.
Step 1: Reset the printer
Resetting the printer can reset the connection with the printhead and clear any error messages.
  1. Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.
  2. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
  3. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  4. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  5. Wait at least 60 seconds.
  6. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
      note:
HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.
  7. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
  8. Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
  9. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

  • If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.
Step 2: Service the printer
If the instructions in this document did not resolve the issue, service the printer.
Service or replace your HP product if you completed all preceding steps.
