Hi @BlackCat6 ,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP Envy 5540 printer is not printing black but is able to print color, there could be several reasons for this issue. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve the problem:

Check Ink Levels:

  • Make sure that the black ink cartridge has enough ink. You can check the ink levels from the printer software on your computer or directly on the printer display.

Clean the Print Head:

  • Use the printer's software utility to clean the print head. This can help remove any dried ink that might be blocking the nozzles. Refer to your printer's manual for instructions on how to perform a print head cleaning.

Align the Print Head:

  • Aligning the print head ensures that the nozzles are properly aligned for optimal print quality. Follow the instructions in your printer manual to align the print head.

Use Genuine HP Ink Cartridges:

  • Make sure you are using genuine HP ink cartridges. Using non-HP cartridges or refilled cartridges might cause printing issues.

Update Printer Drivers:

  • Ensure that you have the latest printer drivers installed on your Windows 8.1 system. You can download the latest drivers from the HP website.

Run the HP Print and Scan Doctor:

  • HP provides a tool called "HP Print and Scan Doctor" that can automatically diagnose and resolve printing issues. Download and run this tool to see if it can identify and fix the problem.

Check Printer Settings:

  • Ensure that the printer settings are configured correctly. Open the printer properties on your computer and make sure that the color options are set appropriately.

Restart Printer and Computer:

  • Sometimes, a simple restart of both the printer and the computer can resolve communication issues and temporary glitches.

Reinstall Printer Drivers:

  • Uninstall the printer drivers from your computer and then reinstall them. Make sure to download the latest drivers from the official HP website.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.-
