Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My husband bought generic not OEM toner cartridges.  I just changed (tried two of them) and now triangle Attention light keeps blinking and won't print.  HP LaserJet Pro M203dw.

Thank you.

Hi @Esparks

Welcome to the HP support community.

I understand you're experiencing an issue with your HP device, and I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. I'm here to help you today.

Here are some steps you can follow to troubleshoot and resolve this issue:

1. Check the Toner Cartridges

Sometimes, generic cartridges may not be seated properly, or there may be an issue with the toner chip.

  • Remove the Toner: Open the printer and carefully remove both toner cartridges.
  • Inspect the Cartridges: Check for any plastic protective strips that need to be removed from the toner cartridges.
  • Reinstall the cartridges firmly, making sure they are properly seated in their correct slots.

2. Reset the Printer

A simple reset can sometimes clear errors caused by new cartridges.

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Unplug the printer from the power source for about 30 seconds.
  3. Plug it back in and turn the printer on.

3. Reset the Printer’s Error State

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Hold down the "Go" button (the green button on the front of the printer).
  3. While holding down the Go button, turn the printer back on.
  4. Continue holding the Go button for about 15 seconds until the printer starts resetting.
  5. Release the button once the printer has reset and check if the Attention light stops blinking.

4. Check for Firmware Updates

Some printers may block third-party cartridges due to security measures or firmware updates. If you're using non-OEM cartridges, an updated firmware might be causing compatibility issues.

5. Try Reinstalling the Toner Cartridges

  • Try another toner: If the first replacement toner didn’t work, try a different generic toner cartridge to see if the issue persists.
  • Consider using an OEM toner: If the problem continues with the generics, the best option might be to switch back to an OEM (original) HP toner cartridge.

I hope this helps! Keep me posted.
