Hi @Ash06ley

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The "There is a problem with the printer or ink system" error can be frustrating, but it is a fairly common issue with HP printers. This error typically occurs when the printer detects a problem with the ink cartridges, the printhead, or an internal hardware issue. Here are several troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve the issue:

1. Restart the Printer

Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve temporary glitches:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for at least 60 seconds to allow the printer's internal components to fully reset.
  • Plug the printer back in and turn it on.

2. Check for Ink Cartridge Issues

The error could be caused by an issue with the ink cartridges:

  • Open the printer’s ink compartment and make sure all cartridges are installed correctly.
  • Remove and reinsert each cartridge carefully to ensure it’s seated properly.
  • Check the cartridges for any damage, leaks, or ink residue. If you see any, it could be causing the problem.
  • If your cartridges are empty or very low, replace them with new ones, as a low ink level can trigger this error.

3. Clean the Ink Cartridge Contacts

Sometimes, ink cartridge contacts can get dirty, causing communication issues:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  • Open the ink cartridge compartment.
  • Remove the ink cartridges.
  • Using a lint-free cloth or cotton swab, gently wipe the metal contacts inside the printer where the ink cartridges connect. You can also clean the metal contacts on the ink cartridges themselves.
  • Let the contacts dry for a minute or two before reinserting the cartridges.

4. Check the Printhead

The printhead is another common culprit. If the printhead is clogged or damaged, the error message can appear:

  • Most HP printers have a printhead cleaning utility that you can run via the printer’s control panel or HP Smart app.
  • If your printer uses a removable printhead, you can gently remove it, check for ink blockages, and clean it with distilled water or a printhead cleaning solution.
    • Note: Be very careful while handling the printhead to avoid damaging it.

5. Update Printer Firmware

Sometimes, an outdated firmware version can trigger errors:

  • Open the HP Smart app on your computer or mobile device.
  • Check for any firmware updates for your printer.
  • If an update is available, follow the instructions to update the printer’s firmware.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
