I am trying to print a 1 page spreadsheet on plain paper from the main tray. Printer seems to be stuck in photo print.
Messages are on printer: 'load paper into photo tray'
On laptop:
HP ENVY 5640 series (network)- out of paper
Status - sent to printer

Try / Consider
Set the Printing Preferences to ensure the setting is as expected for the current job type.
- Basics
Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers > Right-Click your Printer > Printing Preferences >
Adjust settings > After changes are complete > Click Apply > Next, Click OK to exit (close the GUI)
- Custom Print Shortcut
Optional: Create a custom shortcut
Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers > Right-Click on your Printer > Printing Preferences
Tab Printing Shortcut > Select (highlight) the Shortcut you wish to use as a “Template” starter
Change the options as desired > Click Save / Save as > Type a name for your new Template >
Click Apply to save > Next: Click OK to exit
Reminders:
Not all settings are compatible.
For example, you cannot select Media type photo paper with duplex.
Incompatible choices for the current combination are marked with tiny yellow triangle(s).
For example, A4 may be compatible with photo paper but not with Borderless (dependent on printer model).
Not all programs provide support for Custom paper sizes - this might be the case even when the printer and printer software do allow you to create Custom Paper Size forms.
For example, Adobe Reader DC can "see" Custom Paper size templates in the forms list -- Microsoft Publisher may not be able to do so.
- Restack Paper
Remove all the paper from the printer - do not fan paper, carefully flex stack to separate sheets.
Replace paper back into the tray.
- Reset Printer
Reset the printer as shown in this troubleshooting document, Step 4

Try / Consider:
In the software you are using to submit the print job, select the Tray 1 as opposed to leaving the Source to "Automatic" (wording varies).
