My printer will not respond to print requests when using my own "user" icon and password, but it does work under my husband's user name, even though it is the same computer. I have not changed any settings and this started about a month ago. I verified that the printer settings under his user name are the same as on my. Any ideas? I have an older HP computer, a6317c desktop and my printer is HP Officejet Pro 8600. I do not get any error messages,etc. Thanks for any help! Terry

Thanks for visiting the HP community. 🙂 A very good day to you! 🙂 I read the post regarding issues with printing. I will be delighted to assist you here. 🙂

 

You’ve done an excellent job on diagnosing the issue from your end. Superb effort and spectacular research were done as well. 🙂 Kudos to you on that score. 🙂 . I take it as a privilege to share this platform with you. 🙂

 

For better clarity and to assist you better I would require more information regarding this:

  • Did you run print and scan doctor?

It looks like a driver issue.

 

So please perform these steps to completely uninstall the printer.

  • Uninstall the printer from "programs and features" which can be accessed by doing a right-click on the Windows button (Please have the printer Off and disconnected during uninstallation.)
  • Check in device manager, if the printer is listed there, please delete it. (Right click on the Windows button to access device manager)
  • Go to devices and printers, select any printer listed there and you will get some options on the top.
  • Click on print server properties.
  • You will get a popup, click on the drivers tab and delete all the HP printer drivers listed there if any.
  • Delete all the instances of your printer listed in devices and printers.
  • Restart the PC.
  • Once the PC is on the desktop, press Win + R, it would bring a Run dialog box,
  • Type %temp% in the run box and click Ok or hit the Enter button.
  • It would bring up the temporary files folder. Delete the files in the folder (You might not be able to delete all the files).
  • If possible, delete the printer from the registries using Regedit or using any other 3rd party application.
  • Ignore the Regedit option if it cannot be done.
  • Restart the PC again.

 

Then download the latest full feature driver from http://hp.care/2syjMIg and install it on the computer after selecting the correct operating system.

Connect the printer to your computer only when the setup prompts for the printer.

This will fix the issue. These steps are not difficult to perform if done one step at a time. Please take assistance from someone at home if you find it difficult.

 

Please perform all these steps patiently as it is critical to resolving the issue. The trick is to remain patient, Going by your technical expertise and competence I am sure you will be able to perform these steps without breaking a sweat. 🙂

I am trying to reinstall my HP Officejet Pro 8600 printer after following instructions given by DavidSMP, HP support agent to get the printer working under both user names on our computer. I installed out dated drivers, as directed, and have now waited 1 1/2 hours while the computer is "Searching Windows update..." to find the correct software to install my printer after selecting "add a printer" and hooking back up to the computer. Any ideas please?
