Hi @Alice6074 ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand  you're encountering issues with aligning your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-In-One Printer on Microsoft Windows 11, there are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot the problem:

  • Ensure Proper Placement: Make sure you're placing the alignment page correctly on the scanner glass. Typically, there are markings or guides on the scanner bed indicating where to place the page. Ensure the page is aligned properly and placed face-down.
  • Check Alignment Page Quality: Ensure that the alignment page you printed is of good quality. If the page is smudged, wrinkled, or damaged in any way, the scanner might not be able to read it properly. Consider printing a new alignment page and try again.
  • Clean the Scanner Glass: Dust or smudges on the scanner glass can interfere with the scanning process. Use a clean, lint-free cloth to gently clean the scanner glass. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or solvents as they may damage the glass.
  • Restart the Printer: Sometimes, simply restarting the printer can resolve temporary issues. Turn off the printer, wait for a few seconds, and then turn it back on. After the printer restarts, try scanning the alignment page again.
  • Update Printer Drivers: Ensure that you have the latest printer drivers installed on your Windows 11 computer. Outdated drivers can sometimes cause scanning issues. You can download the latest drivers from the HP website or use Windows Update to check for driver updates.
  • Try Different Scanning Software: If you're using the HP Smart app or another scanning software, try using a different scanning application to see if the issue persists. This can help determine if the problem is specific to a particular software or if it's a broader issue with the printer.
  • Reset Printer Settings: As a last resort, you can try resetting the printer to its default settings. Keep in mind that this will erase any custom settings you've configured on the printer. Consult the printer's user manual or HP's support website for instructions on how to perform a factory reset.
