Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

This printer is only accessed wirelessly from 3 computers.

Periodically it will go offline.

I used Belarc to report network information and all computers show in WORKGROUP.

However, the printer shows in MSHOME. How can I change to WORKGROUP?

@HarvMann  Make sure that these settings are enabled:

1.      Select the Start  button, then select Settings  > Network & Internet  > Wi-Fi

2.      Under Related settings, select Change advanced sharing options

3.      In the Advanced sharing settings dialog box, expand the Private section. Next, under Network discovery, select Turn on network discovery

4.       Under File and printer sharing, select Turn on file and printer sharing.

Then remove the printer from Devices and printers and then Add a TCP/IP printer

While adding all the desired sharing settings, check if the workgroup has changed.

Thanks for your recommendation.

I need to schedule time with my client to trial out creating a TCP/IP printer on each computer.

Once completed I will advise you the results.

Riddle_Decipher,

Thanks for your patience ... my client had time today for me to access the printers.

We performed your suggested procedure and then installed as TCP/IP printer.

The subsequent network report still shows printer as MSHOME.

I have attached relevant reports for your review.

Thanks!

I just noticed that some uploaded pages have been blocked!  Why?

@HarvMann The only possible explanation of an image being blocked on a public forum is in case the data contained personal information that wasn't masked before upload,

That said, I've looked into the details, and I needed to know if the printer works fine on a single computer? To check if the printer works fine off the network? If it works fine, you may want to Contact your ISP to resolve the network issues related to the workgroup.

If it doesn't work on a single computer as well, you may want to perform a clean installation of the printer driver to resolve the issue:

  • Press "Windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window.
  • Type "services.msc" to get Services - Go to "Print spooler" - Right-click and "Stop" the service.
  • Now again open "Run" - Type "spool" and ok - Go to PRINTERS folder - delete everything in that folder.
  • Go to services again - Start the print spooler.
  • Now check for issue resolution.
  • If the issue persists, unplug the USB cable from the printer (if present).
  • Go to Control panel - Programs and feature - Select all the HP printer entries and uninstall them.
  • Now go to Control panel - Devices and printer - Select all the printer entries and remove the device.
  • Press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" (There is a space between .exe & /) and press enter.
  • Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.
  • Again, go to the Run window, type - "c:/programdata" - Go to the Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.
  • Restart your computer.

Then, use this link to access the HP website, find the drivers compatible with your windows and install it: Click here

@Riddle_Decipher thank you for your efforts ... however, I wish to clarify a few points.

1. The uploaded images were the Belarc network map and the report generated by the Office Jet Pro 8610 printer. It was my belief this information would be useful for the assessment of this problem. There is no personal info and only local network IP's are visible, ie 192.168.x.x.

2. The original post is:

This printer is only accessed wirelessly from 3 computers.

Periodically it will go offline.

However, the printer shows in MSHOME. How can I change to WORKGROUP?

3. As a long time computer technician, you and I both know the workgroup name must be consistent across all devices on a local network. However, this particular HP printer product continues to show MSHOME, rather than WORKGROUP.

(The client also has a wireless Office Jet Pro 7740 printer and all functions well.)

In reply to your recent post, the Office Pro 8610 works fine, the client will monitor if it goes offline (so far so good).

However, the Belarc network map still shows MSHOME.

4. On another note, the client's new laptop had the Office Pro 8610 printer recently installed using the most current driver.

However, the Belarc network map shows MSHOME.

5. In summary, it seems this workgroup issue is something HP needs to resolve.

Doing hardware removals and fresh installs is not resolving the problem.

The client's local network works properly and is definitely not something an ISP is interested in.

@HarvMann I know what you mean, and I appreciate the details, that said, here's what I recommend you do:

  • Reset printer network settings, re-connect it back to the network, then add the printer and check if it is under Workgroup
  • Once you reset the printer network settings and re-connect it, you have to remove it and re-add the printer again.

This should ideally change the WORKGROUP.

@Riddle_Decipher,

Can you please send me the preferred method to reset printer network settings.

Thanks!
