Yesterday I began the process of installing the OfficeJet 8720. I installed and ran the download ...Full..1881. At one point I had the printer printing over USB from the computer, though there were several loose ends, such as that on the touch screen there was a mesage "initializing 0%" that just kept running.
I followed advice from the Forum to unplug the printer, since it could not be turned off by the button, check for a paper jam (there was none) and plug the printer back in. The initialization re-started and completed.
Now the printer does not print from the computer over USB.
Is there a general answer to the question of how to re-visit the choices that were made during initial installation? Or, should I go through the installation process again, and at what point do I start? There is apparently information in the printer memory and information that it relies on the compute to have.

Hi @JudyInTexas,
Thank you for posting on HP Support Forums. It is a great place to find the help you need, from other users, HP experts, and other support personnel. I see from the post that you are having issues with the printer not printing from the computer over USB on your HP OfficeJet 8720 printer. Don't worry as I have a few steps to help you with this.
Let's try these steps here:
* With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
* Remove USB cable, if present.
* Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.
* Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord and then plug back the power cord to the printer.
* Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle.
I would start by checking the installed printer software by downloading and running the HP Print and Scan Doctor. This tool can diagnose and fix many printing and printer software related issues. Please use this link to help you with that information: http://hp.care/2biN2XE
If the issue persists, I would suggest you go ahead and uninstall the printer and then install the full feature software either from the Disc or from the support website:
Let's try these steps here to uninstall the printer drivers:
1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features
2.) Select your HP Printer
3.) Select Uninstall
4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers
5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose 'Delete' or 'Remove Device'
6.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.
7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)
8.) Click on the "Drivers" tab
9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom
10.) Select OK
11.) Select Apply and OK on the Print Server Properties windows
12.) Close Devices and Printers
Make sure that the USB cable is disconnected before uninstalling and connect it only when it's prompted during the installation process.
Now once the printer drivers are uninstalled, please restart the PC and then download the drivers from the support website. Here is the link.
Let me know if those steps worked for you.
If they did, that's awesome!
Give us some reinforcement by clicking the solution and kudos buttons,
that'll help us and others see that we've got the answers!
Good Luck

Dear Mr. Singh,
Thank you so much for your post. In the days between my post and yours, I tried several things and now have the printer working over USB again, but have not had time to test the other functions, such as fax and scan. Your much-more detailed instructions wil be a great help to me if I need to deal with other settings.
