After upgrading to the new HP app from HP Smart, I am not seeing any way to scan from the document feeder. After I click on scan and then on source, it shows the name of the printer, but it does not show any option to select the document feeder rather than the flatbed. The app does work to the extent to seeing and scanning what is on the flatbed.

I have been able to figure out what to do to select the document feeder and I'm posting the method here for others to use.
First, open the HP app, select the all-in-one/printer you are using and then tap or click on the rectangular scan box.
The tap or click at the top where it shows the paper size - just to the right of the x.
This will open up a menu with the options to choose (1) page size (2) Input source (3) Quality and (4) Color.
Select Input source by tapping or clicking.
This gives you the option to select among (1) Automatic (2) Scanner glass (3) Document feeder and (4) Document feeder 2-sided. Choose Document Feeder to accomplish what I was trying to do, which was scan a one sided multi-page document inserted in the document feeder.
The selection of the document feeder or the scanner glass as in the input source is not accessed through the source button on the lower right side.

Hi @PuzzledUser1,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
The behavior you’re describing, where the new HP App only scans from the flatbed and not the automatic document feeder (ADF), has been reported by some users following the recent update. Our teams are actively investigating this issue and working on a fix through upcoming app updates.
In the meantime, there are a few steps you can take to regain full scanning functionality:
1. Check that Webscan is enabled
- On your computer, open a browser and enter your printer’s IP address to access the Embedded Web Server (EWS).
- Go to Settings → Security → Administrator Settings, then make sure Webscan is turned on.
- Once enabled, try scanning again from the HP App or from Windows Fax and Scan; the ADF should appear as a selectable source.
2. Reset the printer
- Turn on the printer and wait until it’s idle.
- Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and the wall outlet.
- Wait 30 seconds, then reconnect it directly to a wall outlet (avoid surge protectors).
- Power up the printer and reattempt scanning.
3. Scan directly from the printer control panel
If available, load your pages into the document feeder and use the Scan → Computer option on the printer screen. The printer will automatically detect the feeder and begin scanning.
4. Run HP app Diagnose & Fix
Open the HP App, click the Support tab → Diagnose & Fix, and follow the on-screen steps. This tool checks firmware and connection issues that might prevent the ADF from being recognized.
5. Keep your HP App updated
Our engineering teams are rolling out incremental fixes. Ensure you’re running the latest version of the HP App from your respective app store: HP App – For HP Printers, Laptops, and Tech Accessories | HP® Official Site.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have an amazing day!

None of steps one through three have helped. Tapping on the source button shows the device, but it does not show a way of selecting the ADF.
There is no Support Tab leading to Diagnose and Fix that I can find - this is on an Ipad.

Unfortunately, there are no further actions we can take through this channel.
This difficulty scanning resulted from an update to your app, not a problem with my all-in-one. There should be support available when your update has a bug.

Hi @PuzzledUser1,
Thank you so much for taking the time to share this detailed walkthrough. This is incredibly helpful, and I’m sure many other users will benefit from the clear steps you’ve outlined.
We truly appreciate you coming back to post the method. The HP Smart app interface can sometimes be a little unintuitive when it comes to selecting the input source, and your explanation makes the process much easier to understand:
- Opening the Scan window
- Tapping the paper-size area to reveal more options
- Choosing Input Source
- Selecting Document Feeder or Document Feeder 2-sided
These are exactly the correct steps, and your note about the source button not being the place to change the feeder input is spot-on; that’s where most users get stuck.
Thank you again for helping the community. We truly appreciate it! If you ever need help with anything else, feel free to reach out.
Take care and have an amazing day!

Hi @PuzzledUser1,
Thank you for raising this, and we truly appreciate you taking the time to share the solution that worked.
In the HP Support Community, the Accepted Solution is typically selected by the original poster of the thread. If you are the original poster, you should be able to mark your own reply as the accepted solution. If you’re not seeing that option, it may be due to forum permissions or timing.
If the thread was started by someone else, a community expert can review the discussion and mark your post as the Accepted Solution where appropriate. Experts do periodically update threads when a customer-provided solution clearly resolves the issue.
Thank you again for contributing. Sharing what worked for you helps many other customers who may run into the same situation.
Take care and have an amazing day!
