My practically new HP Envy 6400e printer won't recognize the new HP cartridges installed.  The protective tape has been removed.  I have not touched the cartridge sensors.  I installed the cartridges immediately after removing the empty ones.  This is the first time changing out cartridges.  I have taken out the new ones and replaced them.  I have cleaned the sensors in the printer.  I have unplugged my printer and left it unplugged for several days.  The problem persists.

Hi @LUVjourney,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It's frustrating when your printer doesn't recognize new cartridges despite taking all the necessary steps. Here are some additional troubleshooting steps you can try.

  • Restart the Printer: Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve communication issues between the printer and the cartridges.
  • Check for Firmware Updates: Manufacturers often release firmware updates that can improve printer performance and compatibility with cartridges. Visit the HP website and see if there's a firmware update available for your printer model. If there is, follow the instructions to update it.
  • Inspect for Physical Damage: Examine the new cartridges for any physical damage or defects. Make sure there are no plastic bits left behind from the protective tape, and that the cartridges are correctly seated in their respective slots.
  • Clean the Cartridge Contacts: Ensure that the metal contacts on the cartridges are clean and free from any ink or debris. You can use a lint-free cloth or cotton swab lightly dampened with distilled water to gently clean the contacts.
  • Reset the Printer: Resetting the printer to its default settings may help. Refer to your printer's user manual for instructions on how to perform a factory reset.
  • Try Genuine HP Cartridges: While third-party cartridges can often work fine, sometimes certain printers can be finicky with non-OEM cartridges. If you have access to genuine HP cartridges, try installing those to see if the printer recognizes them.
  • Check Cartridge Expiry Date: Ensure that the cartridges you're using are not expired. Cartridges have a limited shelf life, and if they have expired, they may not work correctly.
  • Inspect Cartridge Sensors: Though you mentioned not touching the cartridge sensors, double-check that they are clean and free of any residue or damage.
  • Test with a Different Set of Cartridges: If possible, try installing a different set of new cartridges to see if the problem persists. This can help determine whether the issue is with the cartridges themselves or the printer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
