HP Deskjet 1010
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have just installed a new HP 301 black cartridge and was sure to remove the protective strip. It doesn't print anything all all. HP Printer Diagnostics shows no error. I tried running the Clean feature and the printed page shows colour but no black print. I took a look with a magnifying glass at the aperture where the ink comes out and there is not a speck of black to be seen. The Toolbox shows estimated ink level for the colour cartridge to be around 70% and the black very close to 100%. Any suggestions?

Hi Jay, I had an idea for another test which was to put the old cartridge back in the printer and try that. Although the print was faint it worked, which meant that the problem was with the new cartridge. So I then tried to clean the ink aperture with methylated spirit/denatured ethanol and it worked!

Hi @etchman1

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

If you have already performed the steps from the document Fixing Print Quality Problems for the HP Deskjet 1010 and the issue persists, it could be a hardware failure.

Please reach out to the HP Support in your region regarding the service options for your printer.

If you are having trouble navigating through the above options, it's most likely because the device is out of warranty. If yes? please send me a private message with the region you are contacting us from. Check next to your profile Name, you should see a little blue envelope, please click on it.

Hope this helps!
