Just purchased this printer. It wont pick up and print heavy weigh paper even though specifications state that cardstock is supported in this machine. I see where others have had this problem and have solved it with a paper tray replacement with stronger springs. I don't know where to turn when tech support wont own this problem.

Hi @Bodego,
Thanks for reaching out to the HP Support Forums for a solution to your printing issue.
I understand that you have purchased an HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 All-in-One Printer to use with a Windows 10 computer and you are unable to print on card stock. I would like to help.
What is the weight of the card stock that you are trying to use? It should be listed somewhere on the packaging that it was purchased in.
I will watch for your reply so I can look further into this for you. Please replay at your convenience.
Thanks!

Hi @Bodego,
Thanks for getting back to me.
I referred to the Printer Specifications for the HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 Printer to find the supported paper and card weights ale to be handled by this printer.
The heaviest paper supported by this printer is 28 lb, and the heaviest card stock supported is 110 lb.
It may help to print on the 80 lb paper by selecting Index Card Letter for the Paper size drop-down menu in Preferences on the print settings window when getting ready to print. The media type should automatically change to Card Stock when that is done. Here is a support document that can be used when adjusting print settings - Change Print Settings.
Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance.

Hi @Bodego,
Yes that is right. If you are set up with the main tray and the additional paper tray accessory, the main tray (top tray) is the one that should be being used for specialty paper. Specialty paper is not supported in Tray 2.
here is a support document that covers loading paper and specialty paper - Loading Paper, Envelopes.
If this helps you to reach a solution please click the "Accept as Solution", and the "thumbs up" buttons down below in this message. 🙂

I tried looking for the menu for cardstock and didn't find a listing for that in print settings. I did find down next to the end "thick plain" paper which seemed to work and I was able to print with that setting.
Thanks.

Hi @BAM2,
Good Day. A warm welcome to the HP community. I reviewed the case regarding a query relating to printing from card stock as he paper is not getting picked. I will be delighted to assist you here. 🙂
Superb description and terrific observations made before posting. Kudos to you for that. 🙂
For better clarity and to assist you correctly, I would require more information regarding this:
- Did you check the printer specs to see if this type of card stock is supported?
- There is a limit to tube number cards (sheets) that can be placed in the input tray. Did you check that?
- Did you check if the card type and size are supported by the printer?
For now please try these steps:
Check the product specs link: http://hp.care/2xSpxkS and check if the total number of sheets placed in the tray exceeds the maximum prescribed limit in the input tray.
Also, check if the cardstock size matches the supported and compatible list of cardstock sizes supported by the printer.
- Please try a different brand of cardstock if it is supported.
- Place a lesser number of cards in the tray for it to pick it up.
- Please check these details under the Paper-handling specifications option and look up
- Paper tray capacities
- Supported cards
- Link 2: http://hp.care/2tCBD2r Please check the user guide of the printer and look up these pages 144-145 and 22-25 for more information in this regard.
Please perform all these steps patiently as it is critical to resolving the issue. The trick is to remain patient, Going by your technical expertise and competence I am sure you will be able to perform these steps without breaking a sweat. 🙂
Hope this helps. Let me know how this goes. I genuinely hope the issue gets resolved without hassles and the unit works great. 🙂 Please reach out for any issues and I'll be there to assist you. 🙂
To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help.
If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles. 🙂
Take care now and have a splendid week ahead. 🙂
