I recently bought new ink cartridges for my OfficeJet 6978 All in one. I don't use it that often and the last cartridges that were barely used expired and I could not use them any longer! So I bought new ones, used the a handful of times and now the tape on the black cartridge is coming off. I tried to press it back into place but it won't stay. Now the printer won't work one of the few times I really need it.

Hi @DonIsFrustrated,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your printer cartridges!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

It sounds like the issue may be due to the malfunction of the tape on the black cartridge. Below are some steps you can follow to possibly resolve this issue:

Remove the Printhead:

  • Open the ink cartridge access door.
  • Locate the black ink cartridge and remove it from the printhead.

Inspect the Cartridge:

  • Check the cartridge for any visible damage or if the protective tape is still partially adhered to the cartridge contacts.
  • If the protective tape is damaged, the cartridge may need to be replaced.

Cleaning the Cartridge:

  • Take a lint-free cloth and distilled water.
  • Lightly dampen the cloth and gently clean the electrical contacts on the cartridge.
  • Wait for the cartridge to completely dry.

Reinsert the Cartridge:

  • Once cleaned and dried, reinsert the cartridge securely into the printhead.

Run a Cartridge Alignment:

  • Close the ink cartridge access door and run a printhead alignment test from the printer’s control panel. This helps to ensure each cartridge is properly installed and functioning.

Check for Error Messages:

  • If your printer displays any error messages, follow the instructions to rectify them.

I hope this helps.
