HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus has been working consistently for the last 2+ years. I have been using non-HP in cartridges for the last 8 months, both black ink and color ink (for HP 950 and 951). It was working perfectly the afternoon of 3/21/2018. After a brief local area internet outage, all connections were restored. However, today, 3/22/2018, I now cannot print with this error message:

"Cartridge Problem. Until cartridges are replaced, make sure the printer is turned on to avoid damage to the printer. One or more cartridges are missing or damaged."

I checked each printer cartridge for proper installation and rebooted both the printer and my computer. It wiill not recognize ANY of the 4 installed cartridges. No cartridges are missing, damaged, or have insufficient ink.

The printer is connected wirelessly to the computer. I have not made any software or hardware changes on the computer.

I found the forum advice below, including uninstalling the driver in Devices and Printers, uninstalling on the command prompt, downloading the driver again from the link and reinstalling everything.

This still has not resolved my issue.

I understand that based on prior legal rulings, third-party ink blocking printer firmware updates are not permissible. If the only solution is to "try other cartridges" that have to be HP, when the existing cartridges have worked across multiple replacements, this does not suffice. I cannot locate a Dynamic Security Feature disabling update that seems to work.

Please advise.

In order that I may provide you with an accurate solution, I will need a few more details.

  • When was the last time the printer was working fine?
  • Are you getting any error message when you print?
  • How is the printer connected to the computer?
  • Have you made any software or hardware changes on the computer?

Meanwhile, I recommend you follow the below steps and check if it helps.

  1. In Windows, search for and open Programs and features
  2. Select your HP Printer
  3. Select Uninstall
  4. In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers
  5. In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose ‘Delete’ or ‘Remove Device’
  6. Open up the run command with the “Windows key + R” key combo.
  7. Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)
  8. Click on the “Drivers” tab
  9. Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom
  10. Select Ok
  11. Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows
  12. Close Devices and Printers
  13. Restart the PC
  14. Download and install the printer software from the below link.
  15. http://hp.care/2nikIQ9
  16. Connect the USB cable ONLY when prompted and follow the on-screen instructions.

If the issue still persists, I recommend you replace the cartridge and check if it helps.

Thanks for taking an interest in the HP Support Forums After reading your post I see that you require assistance with the printer not being found. I will be a delight to assist you here.

Superb analysis and brilliant diagnosis of the issue before posting. 🙂  Kudos to you on that score.:)

For better clarity and to assist you better I would require more information regarding this:

  • Did you clean the cartridge contacts?

If not, follow the below steps

Make sure that the cartridges are inserted correctly

  1. Slip your fingers into the slot on the left side of the printer, and then pull forward to open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the left side of the printer. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent you proceed.

    1. Slot for opening the cartridge access door

  2. Make sure that the colored dot on the cartridge label matches the colored dot on the carriage slot.

  3. Push in on the front of the cartridge to release it, and then pull the cartridge toward you to remove it from its slot.

  5. Repeat these steps for other cartridges, if necessary.

  6. Make sure that no cartridge is sticking out farther than the other cartridges. If a cartridge is sticking out, push it until it snaps into place.

  7. Close the cartridge access door.

Check the carriage latch

  1. Slip your fingers into the slot on the left side of the printer, and then pull forward to open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the left side of the printer. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent you proceed.

Figure : Open the cartridge access door

    1. Slot for opening the cartridge access door

  2. Make sure that the carriage latch is down. If the carriage latch is up, press it down until it clicks.

  3. Close the cartridge access door.

Clean the cartridge contacts

  1. With a clean, lint-free cloth (eyeglass wipes or coffee filters work well), wipe the copper-colored contact on the cartridge.

       NOTE:

Make sure that the colored dot on the cartridge label matches the colored dot on the carriage slot.

  3. Repeat these steps for other cartridges, if necessary.

  4. Close the cartridge access door.

Reset the printer

  1. Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.

  2. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.

  3. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.

  4. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

  5. Wait at least 60 seconds.

  6. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.

       NOTE:

HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.

  7. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.

  8. Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.

The printer might go through a warm-up period. The printer lights might flash, and the carriage might move.

  9. Wait until the warm-up period finishes and your printer is idle and silent before you proceed.
