Joined Instant Ink program, but still had a small stock of HP ink cartridges, previously purchased. When the Instant Ink Cyan, Magenta and Yellow cartridges ran out, I replaced them from my existing stock. Up came a dire warning, that I had committed some sort of crime, by installing perfectly good HP cartridges, but not Instant Ink compatible.
Surely, the system can recognise that these are pukka HP cartidges and not make such an annoying fuss.

Welcome to HP Support Forums. 🙂 I came across your post and would like to help.
I understand that you have an HP OfficeJet Pro 6970 All-in-One Printer. I read that you have enrolled for the HP instant ink program> Now you have installed the normal original HP cartridges. But the printer displays an error.
I would like to inform you that you can go ahead and use the regular HP ink cartridges. But I suggest you to use all regular ink cartridges. Because if one of the cartridges is an instant ink cartridge then it will continue your page count on instant ink account.
If you get the message then please press OK and continue to print. Hope this helps.
Let me know how it goes. Cheers! 🙂
