Is there a way to print custom size paper on an Office Jet 6970? I have some HP 4 X 6.5 photo paper and that is not one of the choices in the paper options.

Printer How to > Topic Print > Subjects Instructions and Settings

:Arrow_Right: Creating Custom Paper Sizes

General Example:

Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers >

Left-Click on your Printer one time to highlight >

Left-Click Print Server Properties (along the top ribbon)

Thanks but I can't seem to find Print Server in my Windows 10 machine, I have the latest Win 10 build.  Can you tell me where it is?  I only see Printing preferences and Printing properties when I right click on the printer in control panel. None of those control custom size. It's seems as though HP left a lot out of this printer if you ask me,

If the feature is supported,

If you have previously installed the Full Feature Software for your printer,

The Print Server Properties is along the top ribbon area.

Look for "Add a device" ... track to the right.

Thanks but my screen at that same point does not look like that. It does have ribbon bar at the top that you refer to. What i have is just icons showing the devices.  When I go to the HP 6970 printer and right click print server properties is not there.  I do have properties which when clicked shows hardware properties. None of these leads me to set up custom paper. You  to "Full Feature software". Where can I check if i intalled that.

Thanks in advance.

To confirm what you are saying:

After you Left-Click one time on the printer (icon) to highlight the printer

The top ribbon does not show the following choices, including Print server properties:

Add a device         Add a Printer        Start Scan       See what's printing        Print server properties        Remove device

After you Right-Click on Devices and Printers > Printer

The action does not bring up a menu that includes a method / path to "Custom" paper size settings

For example: Preferences, Properties, or Printer Properties

Properties that includes the "Custom" paper form setup is not part of the "right-click" menu options.

OK...

How to tell if you have the printer software loaded

Printer Software, when it is installed, places the Printer Assistant shortcut icon on the Desktop named for the printer.

Printer software, if it is installed, will show up in Programs and Freatures (under "H"):

Control Panel > icon view > Programs and Features

If you prefer, you can look for the printer software in Apps

Settings > Apps > Apps and Features

Scroll down to the section of programs / software that start with "H"

Printer Software - How to remove / install

Hint:  For best results, do not ignore the Restart sequences.

Printer Software – Uninstall Existing Software

If the software is already installed and you want (need) to uninstall it:

Control Panel > icon view > Programs and Features >

Scroll down, click, and Uninstall the software

After the software is removed, Restart the computer and log in

If printer software will not uninstall, appears to be removed and then shows up again, or is otherwise not “going away” when you tell it to do so, try an Uninstaller program.

Microsoft:  Fix problems that block programs from being installed or removed

Printer Software – Lurking in the Device Manager

If, after the Restart, the printer is still lurking about in the Device Manager, remove it.

Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers

Expand category Printers

If any printer name or “Unknown Device” is listed,

Right-Click on the printer / device > Uninstall

Restart the computer and log in

Printer Software - Installation

NOTE:  If using USB, disconnect the USB cable between the printer and the computer before starting the installation.  Connect the cable when instructed to do so (toward the end of the installation procedure).

Download, save, and install the Full Feature Software for your Operating System version

After the software is installed, Restart the computer and log in

Video help

NOTE:  Videos may be found in one or more locations (depending on printer / software / version)

Open the printer Software and Drivers page >

Scroll down and select Related Videos > Click View All >

Find and view the relevant video

AND / OR

Open the printer support Homepage >

Scroll down and select Video Tutorials > Click View All >

Firmware

Consider installing the printer Firmware

READ (when provided) all instructions before installing the firmware

If / After the firmware is installed, Restart the computer and log in

Reminder:  Firmware is normally updated after the printer software is installed / functional.

Looking for the Custom Paper Size form setup

If the custom paper size feature is supported on your printer

and

If Printer server properties does not exist and therefore cannot provide the access to create the custom form,

then

The custom paper size setup might be inside the dialog used to adjust the other settings (Media - kind of paper, Source - tray).

In this case, when selecting the Paper Size (in Paper / Quality), select the "Custom" setting.

Enter the size of the paper you are using

Complete the setup and print.

For the moment, that is all I have... If I think of anything else, I will post back.

Sorry about not replying sooner but I had to be away. I just noticed that the printer I had was a 6975 instead of 6970. Is there any difference in your solution?

@AndyPitt

The printers in this series are essentially the same.   There might be slight regional differences.  For example, if the product is sold in Africa, it might use different ink than the product (of the same series) sold in the USA.

The Specifications and documentation indicate the feature to createa a Custom Paper Size form is supported.

Specifications > Paper Handling > Supported Custom Sizes

Supported custom sizes

To avoid paper jams and other issues when printing on nonstandard custom paper sizes, make sure the dimensions fall within the parameters listed in the following table.
Paper size
Tray 1
ADF
88.9 to 215 mm (3.5 to 8.5 inches) wide and 127 to 355 mm (5.0 to 14.0 inches) long

127 to 216 mm (5.0 to 8.5 inches) wide and 127 to 355 mm (5.0 to 14.0 inches) long

I am aware of two ways to create a custom paper size form when the feature is supported on the printer.

Two methods to assign custom paper size forms:

Devices and Printers > Print Server Properties

and - for Windows 8.x - Windows 10

Print Dialog > Paper / Quality > Custom setting

Both of these methods are explained previously and in the how-to document, reposted here:

HP Printers - Creating Custom Paper Sizes

I do not know of another method to accomplish the task.

If I find anything else to add, I will edit this post.
