Hello,

This is a frustrating situation. I attempted to print an envelope and the envelope jamed. I removed the duplexer from the back of the printer and removed the envelope - in one complete piece, no tears. I attempted to print an envelope again but no luck.

The printer jamed and I got the warning on the LCD about the jam and what to do to clear it out. I've followed the screen instructions and have looked at many YouTube HP videos about how to clear the jam.  With the front panel open, the printhead is stuck on the far right side and will not move despite what sounds like an attempt by the printer to move. I hear gear grinding sounds.

Is there a manual way to move the printhead?

I've taken the printer to my garage and with my compressor I've blown compressed air into the inside of the printer to clear out any particles, but still no luck getting a print of any sort. I just get the error jam message.

Any help is much appreciated,

Jack

Hello, @Jack_1959 – Hope you are well 🙂

Thanks for reaching out to the HP Forums! I would glad to be of your assistance 🙂

I understand that you are getting a “carriage jam” message on your Officejet printer. Appreciate all your efforts. I will certainly do my best to help you with the issue!

I would first like you to clean the paper path inside the printer. Unplug the printer from the wall socket, use a lint free cloth and try and wipe clean the carriage path / paper path thoroughly inside the printer. There might be very small debris or dust particles which might be causing slight issues for the free carriage movement. Cleaning the carriage path will help us fix the issue. Also, try and move the carriage manually using little force.

You can check the detailed steps here: HP Officejet Pro 8600 Printers - 'Carriage Jam' Message Displays

Once done, I need you to perform a power drain to clear the error message on the printer. Here are the steps:

  • Remove the cartridges from the printer.
  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Remove USB cable, if present.
  • Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.
  • Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord (This is important) and then plug back the power cord to the printer.
  • Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle.

Those steps should do the trick, let me know the outcome!

Good luck 🙂

Dvortex, thank you very much for the reply and video link, but none of those solutions worked. I have cleaned the carriage path bar and it is spotless. I am not able to manually move the print head at all with my hand. It's still stuck to the far right side. When I have opened and closed the front panel I can hear what sounds like grears grinding for a few seconds. Sometimes, I can hear what would be the normal print head moving sound, but the print head doesn't actually move.

I feel that my envelope jam has been the issue, but the envelope pulled out perfectly when I took the rear duplexer off. There were no torn pieces.

Any other ideas?

Thanks very much for your help,

Jack (Austin, TX)

Hello, @Brown_Bear

I would suggest you perform a complete factory reset on the printer. I am sending you a private message with the steps. Please check the mailbox icon at the top right corner of your screen to access your inbox.

Once the printer is reset to its factory state, then try moving the carriage manually and check for the issue resolution.

Let me know how that goes!

Cheers 🙂

I am getting a paper jam error but the unint is completely clear of an debri.  The ink carriage will not swipe side to side when I restart the printer.  teh carriage bar is completely clean of debris.  I might need to bring it back to facatory setting, would you be able to help with this?

Thank you
