The problem is:the printer will not copy. I hit the copy function and I get a beep and nothing happens. I tried a hard boot (turned the printer off by unplugging it) and that did not work. Please help.

Then you will need to contact HP. I have seen some cases reported where getting into the service menu and resetting the printer can cure this. The service menu should only be accessed under the direction of a support agent, it is possible to foul up the printer by a mis-step there. See the post here for warnings.....

Is your printer the Officejet Pro 6890 or the Officejet Pro 8630? Are you copying from the flatbed of the printer or through the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF)?
Are there any messages on the printer's screen?

The printer is a office jet pro 6830. I was trying copy from both the flat screen and the auto feeder. The problems seems to be when I use the touch screen to do a copy. I get a tone and nothing happens. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Based on what you say I would suggest you contact HP. You may need a semi-full reset for your Officejet 6830. From a post by Sunshyn2005, to contact HP Support see the following link to create yourself a case number, then call and it may help speed up the call process:
Step 1. Open link: www.hp.com/contacthp/
Step 2. Enter Product number or select to auto detect
Step 3. Scroll down to "Still need help? Complete the form to select your contact options"
Step 4. Scroll down and click on: HP contact options - click on Get phone number
Case number and phone number appear.

I just ran across another suggestion from @Sanjoy_G
Try Restoring Copy Settings:
Control Panel -> Copy Menu -> Copy Settings -> Restore Settings.
