OfficeJet all in one 3830 printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I keep getting the error message on my printer “Cannot print. Connect printer to update hp instant ink status.” When I click “connect” it says it’s updating and may take a few minutes… but ultimately does nothing.

Printer is connected to Wi-Fi.

On my hp smart account, it is showing printer as connected and ready to print.

I paid the bill for my instant ink subscription and all payment info is current.

Using the correct cartridges that hp sent me.

I turned it off and turned it on.

Disconnected and reconnected the Wi-Fi. Router and everything seems fine.

Virtual support assistant apparently can’t understand what my issue is, so I’m hoping somebody knows how to fix this. My printer is out of warranty at this point. Am I stuck with this thing just being a useless brick???

Hi @mileylittledog,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I understand that you are getting connect to the printer to update the hp instant ink status error. I'd like to help!

Please follow the steps below.

Step 1: Powercycle Network:

There is a chance that an update was run on your network that has now blocked the printer. To resolve any potential router issues, can I have you follow the steps below to power cycle your network connection?

  1. First, unplug the power cable to your Router
  2. Once your Router is unplugged, turn off your printer
  3. Next, shut down your computer
  4. After 30 seconds to 1 minute, plug your Router back in
  5. Next, turn on your printer
  6. Turn on the computer

After a few moments, the internet connection will return. Please check on your computer and ensure that you are able to browse to websites before proceeding.

Once your network is up and running again, please proceed to the next step.

Step 2: Check Connectivity:

  1. On the front panel of your printer swipe to select Setup
  2. Under the Setup menu select Network Setup
  3. If your connection is Ethernet, touch Ethernet
  4. If your connection is Wireless, touch Wireless
  5. Select View Wireless (or Ethernet) Settings
  6. Take note of the IP Address
  7. On your computer, try to access the EWS Browser again by entering the IP Address (with no www.) in the address bar
  • If a website for your printer now opens, please test printing again to verify that the issue has been resolved.

  • If a website for your printer still fails to open,  please proceed to the next step.

Step 3: Restore Network Defaults:

  1. If you're using an Ethernet Cable network connection, please disconnect the Ethernet Cable now
  2. On the front panel of your Officejet select Setup
  3. Select Network Setup
  4. Select Restore Network Defaults
  5. Choose Yes

Once the network defaults have been restored, if using an Ethernet Connection, please plug the ethernet cable back in. If using Wireless, proceed to the next step.

Step 4: Reconfigure Wireless:

  1. Touch Setup on the front panel of your printer
  2. Select Network Setup
  3. Select Wireless Settings
  4. Choose Wireless and ensure it is ON
    Select Wireless Setup Wizard
  5. When prompted, select your Network Name SSID
  6. Enter your wireless password (key). This is case-sensitive.

Once the wireless connection has been established, please gather the IP Address and try to open the printer's EWS Browser again.

Once you're able to open the EWS Browser it will prove with 100% certainty that your printer and computer are communicating over the network once again.
