OfficeJet 5400K
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My OfficeJet 5400K has started making a horrible grinding noise whenever it is printing, or when, every once in a while it kind of turns itself on. The things it prints still look completely correct, and everything seems to function, but the noise is horrible.

I can't remember where, but I heard something somewhere indicating that if you remove a paper jam while the printer is turned on, something can get out of alignment and cause this, but since I can't find it anywhere, I can't follow any advice there was with it.

Just wondering if anyone knows of things to try to resolve this without either taking the thing to the repair shop or considering buying a new printer. (Poor thing has been in use for something like 11 years now, it may be getting tired, even though it doesn't get used much.)

Any suggestions?

I have gone through your Post and I would like to help

Please perform a Printer Reset

(1) Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.
(2) Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
(3) With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
(4) Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
(5) Wait at least 60 seconds.
(6) Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
NOTE: HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.
(7) Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
(8) Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.

The printer might go through a warm-up period. The printer lights might flash, and the carriage might move.
Wait until the warm-up period finishes and your printer is idle and silent before you proceed

Then follow the instructions in Solution Two from this Link: https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-officejet-pro-k5400-printer-series/2511747/document/c0195003...  to clean the Rollers

Keep me posted how it goes

Thank you and have a wonderful day 😊

Sorry ... followed the instructions, and they worked. The printer stopped grinding ... so I happily went on my way, printing, without thinking to come back and say "Thank you!" for the information. My heartfelt apologies, and thanks for the info!
