My OfficeJet 5610 (prehistoric, I know!) is returning a 'Cartridge Error' message when turned on and refers me to the device documentation to troubleshoot. The User Guide does not address this specific problem.
The cartridges are properly seated and the black cartridge that I need to use has plenty of ink. It has a date on it of 2017/04/07. I have tried cleaning the contacts.
The tri-color is almost empty/or empty but I don't need to use it at all.
Both cartridges are HP cartridges. I have tried turning the printer off and re-starting. I have tried unplugging and plugging it back in. I get the same message and flashing light.
Any and all suggestions as to what else I should try will be welcomed.

Thank you for being a part of HP Forums. This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips to your technical queries.
Power resetting the printer, cleaning the cartridge and carriage electrical contacts may resolve the issue. Let's try these steps:
1) Make sure this printer is plugged into a direct wall, not a surge protector
2) Remove all of your ink cartridges from the printer and close the door
3) Remove the power cord from the back of the printer (Do no press the power button)
4) Clean the cartridge and carriage electrical contacts, refer to step 3 from this document.
5) Plug the power cord back into the printer
6) Wait for the printer to turn on completely, then install the ink cartridges.
Let me know how it goes!

Odd. I've since discovered someone here with the exact same problem ... in 2011.
No solution from HP then.
The solution from HP for a cartridge which has hardly been used is to buy another cartridge from HP ... and that's not guaranteed to solve the problem either!
Thanks ... but no thanks !
The HP printer under my desk? HP knows the answer to that, I suspect.
The global warming effect? Who knows.
Will I buy another HP printer? HP knows the answer to that also, I suspect.
Will I hear from HP again? I suspect not.

HP ink cartridges have a warranty end date, which is marked on all HP ink supplies. If the the ink cartridges are still under warranty, you may call HP Support and obtain a replacement.
