OfficeJet 6950
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

OfficeJet 6950 won't print Test Page Windows 7.

Installed printer software numerous times (using CD and then directly from the HP web page online source) for a new HP OfficeJet 6950 and it will not install correctly. When finished the OfficeJet 6950 won't print a "Test Page" in Devices and Printers>Properties> and only gives an error message. And it will not print in MS Word or other software programs. But it prints using "MS Notepad" and prints "web pages using IE11". I've spent many hours on this using the initial setup to direct cable printing and not Wi-Fi. I don't need Wi-Fi at present. Please help as this has been a very frustrating and time consuming ordeal...

@SteveH801,

As I understand you have tried to follow the steps suggested and still having the issue. Don't worry as I have a few other steps which should help you resole this issue.

It's really strange that you are not able to print a test page from the printer but you are able to print from Notepad and web pages. Just wanted to check if you are able to make a copy from the printer.

Let's try and make a “photocopy” to determine whether the issue is with the printer or not. Place a document on the scanner glass and choose “Copy” option. If the printer is making a good copy, then the printer hardware is fine.

If you are able to make a copy from the printer, then I would suggest you could try to update the printer firmware on the printer. If your printer is connected wirelessly, make sure to temporary connect the device with USB and then follow the link to install the latest firmware update- http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/printers/oj6950/OJ6950_R1716A_R1719A.exe. Once done, restart the printer and then check.

If The issue persists, try creating a new user account:

It looks like an operating system issue with the machine. Try to create a new local user and then try to install the printer. Follow the steps here to create a local account on your PC: Create a local user or administrator account in Windows

Now, login to the new account and then try to install the printer and check.

Let me know if those steps worked for you.

If they did, that’s awesome!

Good Luck.

@SteveH801,

Thanks for engaging in HP support Forums! This is a wonderful location to converse with the community, get assistance and find tips! I understand you are having issues while printing from your HP OfficeJet Printer. Don't worry we'll work together to help you find a solution.

Going through your post, it looks like a possible driver issue. I would suggest you do a clean install of the printer software.

First, unplug the USB cable from the printer if present.

Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP Officejet printer entries and uninstall them.

Now go to Control panel – Devices and printer – Select all the printer entries and remove the device.

Press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" (There is a space between .exe & /) and press enter.

Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.

Again, go to the Run window, type – “c:/programdata” – Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.

Restart your computer.

Now click on this link: http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/printers/OJ6950/OJ6950__Full_WebPack_1094.exe to download and install the printer software.

Connect the USB cable if prompted and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance!

Eagerly waiting for your response!

I hope you have a good day ahead,

And Feel free to ask your queries as this forum has some of the best people in the world available and ready to help.

Thanks for the help.

I followed all of your instructions. And found one additional file to be removed - C:\Program Files\HP\HP Photosmart6520series\Bin\... from an older HP Printer and removed that as well. All files/folders were checked for HP items and there was nothing. There is no other HP product on this computer. And I didn't go thru the registry looking for HP items there.

But the same result:

Once installed, the OfficeJet 6950 will not print a "Test Page" in Devices and Printers>Properties> and only gives an error message. It does print using "MS Notepad" and prints "Web pages using IE11". But it will not print in MS Word, WordPerfect or other software programs. So the HP OfficeJet 6950 will still not install correctly.

It's strange however, that the printer will print from some sources but not others, especially the "Test Page" in devices and printers properties.

So I am still bewildered...

I followed your instruction(s). The Photocopy worked so no problems with the printer. Then I updated the printer firmware using your link. The problem(s) were still there. BUT when I uninstalled the printer software again and reinstalled it using another Local User Account, wow, it works. Thanks so much to you!

Another question since you have been so great with the info, I'm a little uncertain how to add the Wi-Fi function to the printer without a little help. The installation guide doesn't make it all that clear how to do that. The instructions either say connect with USB or WiFi when installing the software, but not both. I'm hesitant to try reinstalling the software again or whatever else to do, because of the problems I've had.

So thanks a lot for a little more information...

@SteveH801

You're most welcome.

I'm glad that the issue is fixed. I appreciate your efforts in troubleshooting this issue and have certainly done a good job.

As @Jeet_singh is out of the office today, I'm replying to you.

You may run a wireless setup wizard on the printer to connect it to the wireless network. After the printer is connected to the wireless network, you may re-run the printer software and it will install a network printer.

Hope this helps. Let me know.

Cheers! 🙂

Thanks for the information MKazi, but I still need a little clarification. If I follow your instructions and get the printer connected to the wireless network, then your next step needs more explanation please. You state to re-run the installation software "...and it will install a network printer."

But here's the problem: Do I again remove all traces of HP items on the computer and all printer entries, like I did before as Jeet_singh directed, before reinstalling the software again? Or do I just install the software again on top of the existing installation?

And the other problem is that when installing the new software there were only two options to choose from: 1- Use a USB connection or 2- Install as a wireless printer. There is no option to reinstall without having to make that selection or '1' or '2' above. But this printer needs to be USB connected and be wireless too.

Since I have had such a hard time, in the last weeks getting this printer to work, I do not want to mess up again and have to start all over again. A little more information would be appreciated, please.

Thank you.

I'm sorry, but I got an email saying that my topic "has been accepted as a solution". This is a problem for me because I did not indicate that the solution was indeed finished. In fact my last two replies said that I still needed an explanation to finish the printer installation.

So here I sit four days later waiting for that help. Please respond back to me so that I can get this printer functional, please. When Jeet_Singh last responded we were not finished. Then Mkazi responded that Jeet_Singh was out of the office and MKazi would continue and even said "Hope this helps. Let me know", but the information was not complete and I have heard nothing.

I posted this two times:

Here's the problem: Do I again remove all traces of HP items on the computer and all printer entries, like I did before as Jeet_singh directed, before reinstalling the software again? Or do I just install the software again on top of the existing installation?

Please help me with an answer, or do I have to start another new thread? I am completely perplexed.
