Office Jet 6978
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Office Jet 6978 printed fine for the first week, but stopped printing in the middle of a print job today.  Printer screen said "printing" but page was half printed so I pulled paper out after several minutes of no printing.  There was no way to exit the screen, so I pushed power button.  Now screen says "Printer Error--There is a problem with the printer.  Turn the printer off, then on."  When I push power button, screen says "Improper Shutdown--Printer was not turned off properly.  To avoid damaging printer, always press the power button to turn it off." and then shows the Printer Error message again. Unplugging the power cord causes the same message.  How can I break this loop and print again?

@Mike_W2, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

I'm afraid this is a hardware issue with the printer. Leave the printer unplugged for a couple of hours and then check for the error.

Alternatively, unplug the power cable and hold the power button down for 10-15 seconds and release it. Power on the printer and check.

If the error persists, please reach out to the HP Technical Support team in your region regarding the service/replacement options for your printer.

You may create a case on the website to obtain a case number if required. Kindly watch this video to know how.

I have the same problem....it prints partway and stops.  I shut it down, restart it, reboot the computer and it prints a few pages fine, and then midway, stops.  The only message I get is "error".  NO reason, no rhyme, just frustration.  The suggestion did not help.  If it is a HARDWARE issue, that means the printer is junk and should be replaced.  Problem is, trying to get it replaced after spending hard-earned money, time, and patience on something known to have issues.  Has your problem gotten any better?  The SCAN AND FIX DOCTOR is a phony ;>)   Says it found "problems", but won't tell you what and then still doesn't work.
