OfficeJet Pro 7720 All-in-one Wide Format
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi

I have recently bought an OfficeJet 7720 Pro but I cannot get it to install on my Windows 10 desktop.

I've downloaded the driver via 123.hp.com/ojp7720 and run through the install process to the end and everything looks like it has worked but if I try and print a Windows test page I get the following error...

Operation could not be completed (error 0x00000570)

Some driver files are missing or incorrect. Reinstall the driver or try using the latest version

I've tried forcefully uninstalling everything, including deleting the entries in the registry and the drivers from the System32/spool director then re-installing but I get the same problem.

I have managed to install the printer on my Windows 10 laptop and successfully printed from that but I can't get the same printer working on my desktop which is the main family PC.

@mpburtt,

Welcome to the HP Forums 🙂 I would like to take a moment and thank you for using this forum, it is a great place to find answers. For you to have the best experience on the HP forum, you could also visit our HP Forums Guide for First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More. I understand you are having issues installing the printer drivers on your Windows 10 PC. Don't worry we'll work together to help you find a solution.

To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:

How are you trying to set it up? Is it using USB/Wireless

Have you ensured all the updates are installed on the PC?

In the meantime, let's try these steps here:

Next thing, I would suggest here is to Run Windows Updates troubleshooter -

Download and install the troubleshooter from this link.

Now try to perform Windows Updates -

1) In the search box, type and open Windows Updates.
2) Check for updates.
3) If the updates are available, click on install and restart the computer.

Next thing, I would suggest here is to uninstall the printer drivers from the root level and then reinstall them by following the below steps:

  • Press “Windows key” + “r” to get the “Run” window.
  • Type "services.msc" to get Services – Go to “Print spooler” – Right-click and “Stop” the service.
  • Now again open "Run" - Type “spool” and ok - Go to PRINTERS folder - delete everything in that folder.
  • Go to services again - Start the print spooler.
  • Now check for issue resolution.
  • If the issue persists, also try clean installing the printer drivers. Here are the steps:
  • First, unplug the USB cable from the printer if present.
  • Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP Officejet printer entries and uninstall them.
  • Now go to Control panel – Devices and printer – Select all the printer entries and remove the device.
  • Press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" (There is a space between .exe & /) and press enter.
  • Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.
  • Again, go to the Run window, type – “c:/programdata” – Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Please click here to download and install the software.
  • Connect the USB cable if prompted and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance!

Eagerly waiting for your response!

Hi Jeet

I finally had some time to look at this issue again. I've followed all of your steps and still not got the printer working from my desktop PC.

I'm connecting wirelessly (although I did also try USB). I've even tried disabling the firewall on my PC to see if that was the problem but that made no difference either. I've also run the HP Print and Scan Doctor but that's unable to resolve the problem (its not able to scan either by the way).

Meanwhile, I continue to be able to print from my laptop and my mobile phone.

Hoping for some pearl of wisdom that cracks this

@mpburtt,

Thank you for replying,

As I understand you have followed the instructions suggested and still having the issue with scanning.

I’d suggest using the HP Smart. Go to https://www.hpsmart.com/us/en to download and install the HP Smart app on your PC.

Alternatively, you can also try using HP smart app for Windows - HP Printers - Using the HP Smart App (Windows 10)

Please try these steps here and let me know how it goes for further assistance.

Take care now and do have a fabulous week ahead. 🙂
Regards,

Hi

Unfortunately HP Smart will not print. If I try to print through HP Smart i get the error...

Your printer has experienced an unexpected configuration problem. 0x80070570

Interestingly I can now successfully scan from both HP Smart and HP Scan which didnt work previously.

@mpburtt,

Thanks for the update,

As I understand you are able to scan using the app however having issues while printing. Don't worry as I have a few other steps which should help you resolve this issue.

To solve this problem, try the following:

  1. Hold the Windows Key and press “R” to bring up the Run window.
  2. Type “regedit“, then press “Enter” to bring up the Registry Editor.
  3. Navigate to the following location:
    • HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ CurrentVersion \ Windows
  4. Right-click on the “Windows” folder, then choose “Permissions…
  5. Highlight “Administrators“, then check the “Full Control” box, then click “OK“.
  6. Highlight your username, then check the “Full Control” box, then click “OK“.
  7. Delete the following registry values if they exist:
    • Device
    • LegacyDefaultPrinterMode
    • UserSelectedDefault
  8. Try to set your default printer again. Hopefully this time it works!

Let me know how it goes for further assistance.

Hi

Thanks for the further advice. That registry folder already had full control permissions for both the administrators group and myself but I did delete the registry keys that you listed. Once I had done that I reset the default printer and then tried to print a test page from the Printer Properties dialog. This is what I see when I do that..

...and I see this (the same error) when I try and print from HP Smart...

Sadly no progress

@mpburtt,

It's great to have you back and your patience is greatly appreciated.

After reviewing your post, I see that you have installed HP OfficeJet 7720 PCL -3 Network drivers, Don't worry as I have a few suggestions which should help you resolve this issue.

Please follow the steps suggested and get back to us with the results of the troubleshooting as this will help me in further assisting you.

Let's do a root level uninstall of the printer first and then let's check for windows update, once the updates are installed on the PC, restart the computer and then install the full feature printer software.

Once done, let's create a TCP/IP port and then check if that helps.

Now go ahead and follow the steps to perform Windows update.

Steps for Windows update:

I would suggest here is to Run Windows Updates troubleshooter -

Download and install the troubleshooter from this link.

Now try to perform Windows Updates -

1) In the search box, type and open Windows Updates.
2) Check for updates.
3) If the updates are available, click on install and restart the computer.

Now follow the steps to go ahead and Install the full feature software.

  • Please click here to download and install the software.
  • Connect the USB cable if prompted and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

Once done, Create TCP/IP Port:

1. Search Windows for devices, and then select "Devices and Printers" In the list of results.

2. Right-Click the name of your printer, and then select Printer Properties.

3. Click the Ports tab, click on "Add port" select "Standard TCP/IP Port" and click "New Port"

4. Click next on the Add Standard TCP/IP printer port wizard, enter the printer IP address and click next and then click on "OK".

5. Now under the "Ports" tab you will find the newport with the printer IP address, click "Apply" and "OK".

6. Restart the computer.

Let me know if those steps worked for you.

If they did, that’s awesome!

Hi

Still no luck

As before the PRINTERS folder was already empty when I started and when I open the printer properties dialog it tells me that the printer drivers are missing (no **bleep**).

I re-installed the full driver set (again) and I added a port (I'd prevoiusly tried that but did it again anyway) but I still get told that the drivers are missing when I try and print.

Surely there must be some way to verify if the drivers are, in fact, installed and to ensure that they do install when I run the installation routine.

It looks like you were interacting with @Jeet_singh, but he is out for the day. I'm KrazyToad & I'm at your service.

i have gone through your Post and I see that the issue persists even after multiple troubleshooting steps

I suggest you uninstall the printer driver from Root level once again.

Restart the computer and create a New User Account

    • Select the Start  button, then select Settings  > Accounts  > Family & other users > Add someone else to this PC. (Depending on your edition of Windows 10, you may see Other users instead of Family & other users.)

    • At the bottom of the page, select I don’t have this person’s sign-in information, and at the bottom of the next page, select Add a user without a Microsoft account.
    • Enter a user name, password, password hint, and then select NextNote: If you’re using Windows 10, version 1803 and later, you can add security questions—instead of a hint—to your local account to help you reset your password in case you forget it.

  • To make the new account an administrator account, select Start  > Settings  > Accounts  > Family & other users (or Other users, if you're using Windows 10 Enterprise), and select Change account type. Under Account type, select Administrator > OK. Restart your device and sign in with the new administrator account.

Next Login into the New User Account and download the Full Feature Software once again and follow the onscreen instructions

Keep me posted how it goes

Thank you and have a great day 😊
