What a vague, BS answer that is. Why don't you just tell the folks about the button in the bottom of the tray that they need to push so that they can slide the tray in all the way to rest against the 8 1/2 x 11 paper?

I would agree. This printer tray design is horrible. If you set it to 8.5 x 11, it pulls 10 to 15 pages each time it tries to print 1 page. If you pull out the tray to the incorrect setting, then gently load paper so it just rests against the back two plastic pieces with the paper lined up against the 8.5 x 11 setting it works. Just don't bump the paper or move the tray in any way shape or form when you load it. I'm sending this back to Amazon. Defective design.

Thank you! I've never in my life had such a hard time with something so simple, and I've worked in offices for 30 years. Without Wflinn, I'd probably have broken off one of the flimsy plastic pieces. Ridiculous!! Thanks, Wflinn!

2 solutions for this issue.
1. You can get 3 children's 6 inch wooden rulers and tape them together, make sure it fits when the tray is pulled out and locked at 8x14, the top grey piece needs to be locked at 8x14 as well. You just made a spacer to fill the void when the tray is locked at 8x14.
2. HP make another tab slot (bottom of the tray) to engage in the tray at the 8x11 paper size; additionally add some holes for the top grey piece to engage the ears at 8x11.
Go BUCS!

So here is my solution. I was prepared to take the whole thing back to the store, but now it is printing like a champ. -- First, this paper tray is NOT like the "normal" paper trays where the paper rests at the back of the tray. The button that Wflinn is talking about needs to stay clicked in. This means there will be a gap (at the front when you are looking down) between the end of your paper and the end of the paper tray. This is ok! -- If you keep getting a paper jam, make sure the tray is in the clicked position and the paper is even with the front (where the prongs are). Also make sure the green lid is covering the lower tray completely (like a lid on a pot). There is a little video on the screen for how to clear a paper jam by opening the front and lifting up the platen. Do this as well. I have had this printer 2 days and it does not seem as sturdy as my 8600. I have a home office and this paper tray system seems too fragile.
