My Officejet Pro 8610 has stopped printing and the print cartridge is 'locked' on the rightside of the printer. One week ago I succesfully printed a 5 page document double-sided without problems. No paper was torn or missing a piece. I only use HP ink cartridges and I use the printer occassionally so it should last a long time.
I tried to print another document and received the "Print Cartridge cannot move..." message. I followed the video posted to youtube on how to overcome this including checking for pieces of jammed paper in the back, bottom and front of the printer. I turned on/off the printer, unplugged and plugged the electrical cord and plugged the printer directly into the wall outlet. The message has remained. I read about a software update that overcame using different branded ink cartridges and checked my printer. The software update appears to be installed as I could not install the update even though I do not use non-HP ink cartridges.
I request help in finding a solution. Is it a software problem or something else? Please advise.

Hi @Yodaman,
Thanks for taking an interest in the HP Support Forums! This is a great location to get resolutions and interact with experts from the community. I came across your post and wanted to assist you. I understand you are getting "Print Cartridge cannot move" error message on your printer screen. Don't worry as I have a few suggestions which should help you resolve this issue.
To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:
Have you checked for any obstructions inside the printer?
Are you able to move the carriage manually?
Have you tried to update the printer firmware?
In the meantime, let's try these steps here:
I would first like you to clean the paper path inside the printer. Unplug the printer from the wall socket, use a lint free cloth and try and wipe clean the carriage path / paper path thoroughly inside the printer. There might be very small debris or dust particles which might be causing slight issues for the free carriage movement. Cleaning the carriage path will help us fix the issue.
Once done, I need you to perform a power drain to clear the error message on the printer. Here are the steps:
- With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
- Remove USB cable, if present.
- Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.
- Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord (This is important) and then plug back the power cord to the printer.
- Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle.
Also, make sure you have checked all the steps mentioned here: HP Officejet Pro 8600 Printers - 'Carriage Jam' Message Displays
If your printer connected wirelessly, make sure to temporary connect the device with USB and then follow the link to check for the latest firmware update if available for your printer, using this website.
Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance!
Let me know if those steps worked for you.
If they did, that’s awesome!
Give us some reinforcement by clicking the solution and kudos buttons,
That’ll help us and others see that we’ve got the answers!
Good Luck.

Jeet,
Thanks for the reply. I have completed the instructions as described in your previous response. The same message that the Cartridge is jammed appears on the front of the printer and it will not print. I'm ready to move to the next steps.
