We moved to a ISP that is using IPv6 primarily and we have all our devices now receiving IPv6 addresses via prefix delegation to the network and DHCPv6 handing out IP addresses via the router.  For devices that need static IP's I have setup DHCPv6 reservations.  This works fine for most devices but the OfficeJet when first booting pulled it's address from the pool before I created the reservation and will not release it:

How can I force the printer to release that address.  When I look up in the table of current leases on the router that lease is completely expired and not in use.   I have tried everything and the printer just wont drop that address.  Any idena?

Hi @RonV44,

Welcome to the HP Support Community

I understand you are facing an issue with your wifi setup issues OfficeJet Pro 8710 will not release DHCPv6 address. Not to worry I will help you to get a resolution to resolve the issue.

To assist you better:

  • How far is the printer located from the WiFi router?
  • Do you have a dual-band router?
  • If you have a dual-band router and both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks share the same name/SSID, the printer will not be able to connect to the network. In this case, contact your Internet service provider to assign different names to both networks.
  • May I have the exact model name of the product? Refer to this document for steps to find the product details. Do not share any of your personal information such as serial, phone number, email ID, etc.

While you respond to that, Let's perform a power drain:

  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Remove USB cable, if present.
  • Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.
  • Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord (This is important) and then plug back the power cord to the printer.
  • Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle

Thank you for the reply.  I see you threw all the "Kitchen Sink" responses from the HP Self Service page.  I will entertain you with my replies:

How far is the printer located from the WiFi router?

Not using WIFI using Ethernet   I guess I should have put that in the original post

Do you have a dual-band router?

Not Applicable, see answer above

May I have the exact model name of the product? Refer to this document for steps to find the product details.

Is it just my imagination but you provided a "dead link" for the steps to give exact info.  Never fear I know how to read things and here is my exact model

HP OfficeJet Pro 8715 purchased from Costco
Real Model number: D9L18-80113 Rev D

As for the other things you talk about such as "draining power" have done that multiple times based on articles posted all over these forums and like other folks it never solves the problem .

No new firmware is available for this printer.

I would post the entire network page of the printer but you may know that IPv6 addresses are "public" so I am going to obfuscate the first 64 bytes so hackers don't try to attack my network.  I did assign a static IP address for IPv6 on the printer just to tide thing over but I usually use a DHCP reservation for static addresses because you never know when the ISP will change IPv6 prefix delegations:
