Hi All, This morning I went to scan a paper and the main display on the printer will not come on! I have unplugged, waited 60 seconds, and plugged back-in and I still have no display! The Home, "?", and Back Icons on the left side are displayed. This happened once before and it was something simple. I also threw it out and bought a new one, I tried one suggestion and the display worked! But, for the-life-of-me I can't remember what it was, since it happened a year and 1/2 ago! So any help would be appreciated.

Hi @RJMurray,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If the display panel on your OfficeJet Pro 8720 is not turning on, and only the Home, "?", and Back icons are displayed, it can be frustrating. Since you've already tried unplugging and replugging the printer with no success, here are some additional steps you can take to troubleshoot and possibly resolve the issue:
1. Power Cycle the Printer
- Unplug the printer from the power source. Wait for at least 60 seconds to ensure that any residual power is discharged.
- Plug the printer back in and turn it on. This step can help reset the printer’s internal components.
2. Check Power Supply:
- Ensure that the power cord is securely connected to both the printer and the wall outlet. Try plugging the printer into a different outlet to rule out a power issue.
- If you have a spare power cord or power adapter that is compatible with your printer, try using it to see if the issue is with the power supply.
3. Inspect the Printer’s Interior:
- Sometimes, opening and closing the scanner lid can reset certain internal components.
- Ensure that there are no paper jams or foreign objects inside the printer that could be causing the display issue.
4. Perform a Hard Reset:
- With the printer turned off and unplugged, hold down the power button for about 15-20 seconds. Release the button, plug the printer back in, and turn it on.
5. Update Printer Firmware::
- If you can access the printer’s web interface or control panel, check for any available firmware updates. Outdated firmware can sometimes cause display issues.
6. Check for Firmware Recovery Model:
- Some printers have a recovery mode or hidden reset function. Check the printer’s manual or the HP website for instructions on entering recovery mode.
7. Perform a Factory Reset::
- If the display is not responsive and you can’t access settings, a factory reset may be required. Check the printer’s manual for instructions on how to perform a factory reset without using the display.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
