Trying to print 5.5 x 4.25 note cards (paper true size is 5.5 x 8.5).   Added custom paper size "Note Cards" using instructions found on  HP Creating Custom Paper Sizes for Windows/ "...from Devices and Printers" (could not use "...Printer properties" as  I do not have a "custom" button).   Here are the steps I take in order to Print:

  • Word document page settings has custom size paper = 5.5x 8.5
  • Loaded note card paper into printer, setting tray sizing guides accordingly (centers paper in tray)
  • Click Print, HP based print window appears, Note Cards does not appear in drop down
  • Click link for  "Print using system dialog..."
  • Clicked Preferences
  • Go to Printing Shortcut Tab/ Paper type = Other Matte Inkjet Papers (cannot choose size here)
  • Go to Paper/ Quality Tab  - Advanced... button
  • Go to Paper/Output item - Paper Size - Note Cards appears and is chosen
  • Click OK to close Advanced Popup
  • Click OK to close Preferences Popup
  • Click Print

When print comes out the text and images are offset as if the printer thought I was printing on Letter sized paper.   I find this particularly weird since the paper is centered in the tray when it loads which places it several inches away from the standard location of Letter sized paper when loaded.

Ran into a similar issue when printing shower invitations but had not created custom print size at that time.

Please help!  I have wedding Thanks You's to print.

The following assumes you have installed the Full Feature Software / full driver printer software.

NOTE: I might have missed the point entirely, in which case this is a waste of our time....

Trying to print 5.5 x 4.25 note cards (paper true size is 5.5 x 8.5).

Printing Duplex / Booklet?

The most likely answer to the issue:

Smaller paper - even a paper size that would normally handle Duplex / Booklet printing,

might NOT correctly handle the margins for this operation.

To Test - Export the document to PDF and Print using

Adobe Reader DC

If the result is still a mis-matched margin, the paper is just too small.

Convinced this is not the case?

Try / Consider:  Adjust the margins to be larger and retest.

Still no joy?  Paper is perhaps too small to handle the margin offset.

OR

If this is not the case - that is you are not trying to print Duplex / Booklet form on your smaller paper...

Considerations

Is the paper size 4.25 X 5.5 inches OR is it 5.5 X 8.5 inches?

It is important that the custom paper form and the actual size of the paper are a match.

This should be matched by the actual paper size and the size of the "Page" in the Word document.

Are you printing from within the Word document?

Is the printer aware of the change / paper size loaded in the printer?

That is, did you tell the printer about the paper size / type after loading the paper into the printer?

Suggestions:

Do not set the margins in the Word document to less than the margin limitation.

If the content continues to shift - set margins to "Narrow" - most printers will tolerate a 1/2 inch margin all around.

Print from within Word -

File > Print

Set the main print menu options then click Printer Properties to select / check the Shortcut and other Tabs / paper options.

Click OK to save the selections in the Properties menu and to leave the menu

When ready, Print

Custom Paper Size Forms

For those reading

When supported, Custom Paper Size forms are generally created using one of a couple of methods.

Which method you use to create the form is printer software dependent.

The process is explained and illustrated in the HP document:  HP Printers - Creating Custom Paper Sizes

Example - Custom Paper Size Form - Printing Preferences / Print Server Properties.
