While scanning I got a communications error with instructions to disconnect the printer and restart it which I did but the printer never initialized after I plugs the power back in. The screen displays HP invent and blinks off and on occasionally but otherwise does nothing. I tried a hard reset (right arrow + Cancel) and it comes up with a green screen with 12345 on it and a red memory light comes on but no matter how long I hold those buttons down I do not get any other messages. Any suggestions on how to get this thing working again would be greatly appreciated.

Never mind, while I was writing up my post the printer was plugged in and after about 20 minutes initialized. It disconnected a couple of times from the computer (device manager show it there, gone, there, gone and there again). The final instance allowed me to use the printer to scan via solution center.
