I have 3 compatible color cartridges (C/M/Y) which are two thirds full. My printer recently reported that the black cartridge had run out, so I replaced it with a genuine HP black cartridge. Now it reports the C/M/Y cartridges are empty. Is this yet another HP cartridge blocking rip-off?

Your printer probably has the recently new HP Firmware update.
I suggest you don't install any 3rd party cartridges. It might prevent your printer from working.
Try resetting your printer by powering off and removing the power cable. Wait a couple of minutes. plug the cable back on and turn the printer on again. This is the method used for the Officejet Pro 8620.
See if you still get the same error message. If not, remove all the cartridges and install them one at time. Each time closing the printer's access panel and see if it shows the ink as installed and the others missing. Do this each time for each of the Ink cartridges and see if the printer recognizes your cartridges again.
Otherwise a HP Employee here will need to show you how to reset the Firmware on your printer.

Thanks for your response. The printer is almost 3 years old and the 3rd party cartridges have worked perfectly until now. But I won't be buying HP ever again after this.
I've tried the methods you suggest. Power down doesn't change anything. The printer accepts the 3rd party cartridges when inserted one by one, but when the final HP black cartridge is inserted, all the 3rd party cartridges are flagged as needing replacement.

I've waited a week with no response from any HP Employee. Yet another reason to never buy HP in the future.
