Will the 7740 operate successfully in all functions when connected using a USB cable (print and scan to PC)?  That is, I wish to avoid using the wi-fi and connect it to the PC with a cable.

Yes, printer can print and scan using the Full Feature Software on the computer.

HP Printers - USB Printer Setup (Windows)

No, all functions are not available.

Anything for which you need a network connection will not work.

This includes using the Embedded Web Server (EWS), HP Smart for Windows, ePrint, sharing the printer, etc.

If you wish to have access to some wireless functionality without having the printer on your network, consider using Wi-Fi Direct.  Wireless Direct uses the printer's Wi-Fi radio to connect the printer wirelessly to your computer.

Thanks for the feedback.  I have it hooked up via a USB cable and, so far, I have been able to do what I need.
