Officejet Pro 8600
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Have an Officejet Pro 8600. It has ALWAYS had this issue with Windows 10 - sometimes it aggravates me more than other times. The printer goes to "sleep" after an idle timeout. The timeout is configurable to be 5, 10, or 15 minutes. That is all well and good, and I applaud the intent. HOWEVER, when connected to the network via wifi, MS Windows (all the versions I've tried, at least) comes to the conclusion that the printer is "offline." Windows has no way to send a "wake-up" command or anything like it o the printer, so there the situation stays until some manual intervention is performed to jolt Windows into understanding the printer is back on-line.  I would just as soon turn off the ECO feature, and keep the printer active, or find some way to convince Windows to try communicating with it - but they seem to be in am impasse when this occurs.  Anybody have any solutions?

@dkj099, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Assigning a static/manual IP address to the printer may resolve sleep mode issues on the printer.

  • Obtain the IP address of the printer – You can touch the “wireless” icon on the printer control panel to obtain the IP address.
  • Type the IP address at the top of your web browser to obtain the printer EWS page on your computer.
  • If you get any security notification, click on show details/advanced and 'proceed to this website'.
  • Go to "Network" tab - General - Select "Network protocols" - Select "Enable IPv4 only" (or similar) - Apply the settings.
  • Go to the “Network” tab – Click on “Wireless (802.11) – Then click on “Network address (IPv4)
  • Click on the radio button which says “Manual IP” and then click “Suggest a manual IP address” to give a manual IP address to your printer.
  • Click on the radio button which says “Manual DNS Server” and under manual preferred type 8.8.8.8 and under manual alternate type 8.8.4.4 (This is Google DNS server address)

Monitor the printer.

Hello - I am still testing, but I believe there may be a solution to the issue that doesn't require assigning a static IP address. Microsoft had some tech articles; in one of them there was a vague reference to an "HP Printer Sleeping Glitch." The article said an updated driver from HP was available to address the glitch: "OJ8600_1316.exe".

The executable actually installed an entirely new printer and FAX instance, but so far, the printer has been running (about 5 days) without the sleep/offline issue.

But thanks for the support. I appreciate the suggestion and your involvement.
