I have downloaded and installed the newest drivers and software from HP's website and still can't get my printer to do duplex printing anymore. I have set the settings on print on both sides so many times I have it nearly wore out. Any ideas???? Do I need a firmware update? And if so, how do I go about doing that after I download the firmware file???

@union8651, Welcome to HP Support Community!
Try to install the Windows built-n drivers for this printer and check if that helps. Go to http://hp.care/2nxKJv8 and follow the steps listed under step 3.
Once done, try to print to the new printer entry and check.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

I never thought that using the Windows drivers would be better than anything I can get from the manufacturer, but I did try it. I got the same results. I even took the duplexer off of the back of the printer to see if there was a problem there and put it back on. Still no change. Could the duplexer be bad??? How would I check this??? Also, when I've tried to install the full version of this software from HP's website, it only installs the basic version of the software. Any correlation to the duplexer not working???

Update the printer firmware
Download available firmware updates from the HP website
With the printer on and connected to the computer, go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads, and then identify your printer. Look for and install any available firmware updates.
For more information, go to Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware.
The 'automatic discovery' feature used by some (Windows) drivers on installation (or update) doesn't always work; ensure that the driver knows that a duplex unit is present on the printer (assuming that one is present):
- For the printer instance in question, bring up the Printer properties dialogue.
- Select the Device settings tab.
- Ensure that the duplex unit is set to Installed rather than Not installed.
You'll probably need to be logged in with administrator credentials in order to change the device settings.
Please check this link: http://hp.care/2i44okI (HP Printers - How to Print on Both Sides of the Paper (Windows) (Duplexing) ) to assist you with duplex printing.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

OK, I've tried to install a firmware update, but when I click on the file to install it, and shows my printer, it says status is not applicable, and the update button is grayed out. I did click on the printer properties and it shows automatic duplex unit is installed.

Thanks for replying!
The grayed out update button says - the firmware installed on your printer is already updated,
Are you able to make two-sided copies on the printer?
Also, try using the HP Smart App. Refer to the document HP Printers - Install and Use the HP Smart App for help.
Keep me posted for further assistance.

Unfortunately, nothing you suggested worked. What I did was edit the registry file and deleted anything that referred to the officejet printer. Rebooted the laptop and then was able to install the printer. I've had to do this many times for HP printers just to get them to install correctly. I still only use HP products, but I wish they could get this glitch fixed. It's been happening with me for over 25 years.

Two-sided copying is not supported by the HP Officejet Pro 8610. Only automatic two-sided printing is supported for this model.
If you have tried all the steps mentioned in the previous posts and also checked the print settings on the PC for 2 sided printing and if the issue persists, please contact our HP Support team for further assistance:
1) Click on this link - www.hp.com/contacthp/
2) Select your product type below.
3) Enter the serial of your device.
4) Select the country from the drop-down.
5) Select the appropriate option based on your preference.
6) Fill the web-form and proceed further.
Keep me posted for any other assistance.
