Officejet Pro 8610
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

When attempting to do a simple print, such as a one-page message on a Word document, the "Print" page comes up as by design to choose the layout or number of copies, etc. But as soon as I click the "Print" button one or two windows appear designating the print info is being sent to the printer from my PC. However, at this point a "Send Fax" window appears.  Any attempt to close the "Send Fax" window seems to cancel any print commands. I've read about this problem in the Forum already and the common fix was to download the "HP Fix and Scan Doctor" and follow all the suggestions it lists.

This appeared to work for some but I could tell it didn't work for others. Beyond the "HP Fix and Scan Doctor" suggestion, I've not seen any other solutions offered. This printer HAS worked perfectly in the past but has also many times come up undetectible on my wireless network which may be a related problem. Restarting the printer, PC, or even wirless modem will usually solve this problem but I'm up against a brick wall with this "Send Fax" dilemma and may have to call out a repairperson to solve this mystery. I'm hesitant to do that because this printer isn't even a year old and doesn't get used that much. Other than these "glitches" I love it and admire the quality of the prints it produces.

For the record, my PC is connected to an Internet modem by way of an ethernet cable. The printer as well as my satellite tv reciever and three smart tvs connect to the same modem wirelessly via a secured system. I've also connected to the Internet modem wirelessly from the PC which unfortunately produces the same "Send Fax" nonsense. Also for the record, the modem has ample strength to carry the load according to my provider. PLEASE HELP if you can. Thanks.

Greetings @pvillerider,

Welcome to HP Forums and Thanks for the post.

I understand that you are unable to print as it brings up the fax everytime you try to print any document.

Don't worry, I will be glad to help.

Kudos to you for trying a lot of troubleshooting steps on your own.

Are you able to make a copy on the printer?

Copy function of a printer is independent of the software on the computer.

If you are unable to make a copy, please do hard reset (disconnect the power cable of the printer, wait for a minute and connect the power cord directly to a wall outlet and turn the printer ON.)

If the printer still does not make a copy after a hard reset. Please contact our phone support for the service or upgrade options for the printer.

If your printer is able to make a copy successfully.

Open devices and printers on your computer. (you can search for devices and printers in Cortana or the search box next to the Windows button.)

Check how many instances of your printer is listed in devices and printers window.

One of them will be fax and the other instance will be without fax.

Please right-click on the one which does not mention fax and set it as the default printer.

This should resolve the issue you are facing.

Let me know if this helped.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!! Everything you told me was spot on and led me to a solution for my dilemma. The only difference in what I did from your directions was to completely remove the icon for the HP8610 with the "fax" listing. The other HP8610 without the "fax" listing was already checked off as Default Printer. Of coursce this may or may not cause problems if I ever need to use the unit as a fax but for now I have no need and I'm ecstatic. Thank you SO MUCH, once again.

Thanks for the reply and glad to hear that the issue resolved. Whenever you want to use the fax, you can manually select fax option as the default temporarily.

Please click here for the printer manual.

Please do post your technical queries on our Forums for assistance.
