My printer is connected via ethernet (wired) only (i.e. no WiFi) but won't print unless I reconfigure the "Wireless Connect" setting from "on" to "Off" and back to either On(with Security) or On(without Security) or from either "On" (with or without security) to the other "On" setting. I've searched for a solution but have been unsuccessful in finding any report with my particular problem, never mind a suggested solution.

@IkeBottema I appreciate the clarification, and I suggest you follow the below steps to assign a static IP to resolve this issue:
· Obtain the IP address of the printer – You can touch the “wireless” icon on the printer control panel to get the IP address.
· Type the IP address on your web browser to obtain the printer EWS page on your computer.
· Go to "Network" tab - General - Select "Network protocols" - Select "Enable IPv4 only" (or similar) - Apply the settings.
· Go to the “Network” tab – Click on “Wireless (802.11) – Then click on “Network address (IPv4)
· Click on the radio button which says “Manual IP” and then click “Suggest a manual IP address” to give a manual IP address to your printer.
· Click on radio button which says “Manual DNS Server” and under manual preferred type 8.8.8.8 and under manual alternate type 8.8.4.4 (This is Google DNS server address)
Create TCP/IP Port:
1. Search Windows for devices, and then select "Devices and Printers" In the list of results.
2. Right-Click the name of your printer, and then select Printer Properties.
3. Click the Ports tab, click on "Add port" select "Standard TCP/IP Port" and click "New Port"
4. Click next on the Add Standard TCP/IP printer port wizard, enter the printer IP address and click next and then click on "OK".
5. Now under the "Ports" tab you will find the newport with the printer IP address, click "Apply" and "OK".
6. Restart the computer.
If you wish to thank me for my efforts, you could click on "Accept as solution" on my post as the solution should help others too.

Welcome to the HP Community
I suggest you do a Hard Reset on the printer
(1) Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.
(2) Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
(3) With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
(4) Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
(5) Wait at least 60 seconds.
(6) Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
NOTE: HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.
(7) Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
(8) Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
The printer might go through a warm-up period. The printer lights might flash, and the carriage might move.
Wait until the warm-up period finishes and your printer is idle and silent before you proceed.
Update the firmware for the printer using this link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/product/hp-officejet-pro-8610-e-all-in-one-printer-series/5367603/docum...
Restart the printer.
Keep me posted, how it goes!

Hi Raj,
I went through the procedure of power down and powering back up. When I checked for a printer update (via the printer's display panel), the printer responded that it has the most current updates installed. (I have set "auto Update" to "On"). For good measure, using the printer's Web Services browser interface, I browsed to Web Services Settings > Product Update > Check Now and received a similar
"The printer is up to date.
No new updates are available this time."
I tried printing but again after a short delay, the printer only empties the print queue when I again follow one of the sequences I describe in the OP.

@IkeBottema There's something you should know:
You cannot use both wired and wireless at the same time, you will need to remove the wired connection before using the below steps to connect to the wireless network,
That said, I suggest you restore to network defaults using the below steps:
Once done, please run the wireless network wizard using the steps under Page. 106 Chapter 8 Network setup: Click here to access the user guide.
I hope that answers your query,

The thing is, I want to use "wired" mode thus have "wired" enabled and "wireless" disabled. Yet after an indeterminate timeout period, I need to "wake up" the printer by toggling "wireless direct". Why should "wireless direct" have anything to do with "wired" mode?

Thanks Riddle_Decipher! That did it. Actually all I had to do was select the correct port as I'd already fixed my IP address via the router's DHCP capability however a previously-created port -- presumably when I originally configured the driver and when I hadn't fixed the address -- was selected. All I had to do was to delete the old port and select the port using the IP address I had fixed.
Thanks again.
