Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Inserted new (but expired) magenta 951 cartridge.  Now printer failure message "there is a problem with the printer or ink system"  did the on/off crap numerous times.  Bought a new unexpired magenta 951 cartridge .  Printer recognized new cartridge but still showed a red "x" over the icon in the printer ink level window.  Pulled the printhead, removed all cartridges, cleaned [printhead, reinstalled, replaced cartridges.  Same **bleep** message.

Can anyone help?

@picante2025, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
We see you are facing a frustrating issue on the HP OfficeJet Pro 8615 where the printer fails with a “Problem with the printer or ink system” error, even after swapping ink cartridges and cleaning the printhead.

Here's a thorough step-by-step fix guide:

Double-check the cartridges

  • Use only genuine HP 950/951 cartridges. Even if a cartridge is new and unexpired, third-party or refilled ones often cause this issue.
  • Check for protective tape still on the new cartridge.
  • Clean the electrical contacts (gold dots) on both the cartridge and printhead with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.

Inspect the printhead again

You've cleaned it once, but check:

  • The seating of the printhead, make sure it's clicked in securely.
  • No ink clogs or burnt contacts.
  • Gently dab the nozzle area on a paper towel, you should see all four color strips.

Update or reinstall the firmware

Sometimes a firmware bug causes this message:

Download latest firmware from HP Officejet Pro 8615 e-All-in-One Printer Software and Driver Downloads | HP® Support

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
